It’s no secret that Toyota is focusing heavily on developing vehicles with off-road capabilities. The Japanese automaker has been putting all-terrain tires and skid plates on almost all of its lineup. This could be due to the success of the popular off-roading truck the Toyota Tacoma.

In America, people love to explore the outdoors. Used Toyota Tacoma sales have skyrocketed during the global pandemic. Why? Everyone wants to get outside and enjoy an adventure that distracts them from the perilous current adventure at hand. Toyota’s got off-road fever. Now, according to MotorTrend, even Toyota’s minivan is hitting the trail.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition starts at a whopping $46,565. The fully loaded model barely teeters below $50,000. The base model 2022 Toyota Sienna is expected to start at around $36,000. So what possible reason could Toyota have for a $10K price increase?

An off-roading minivan sounds oxymoronic, and yet, enter the Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition. It comes in a new cement color that is exclusive to the trim. The minivan’s off-roading trim uses special shocks and springs to add a 0.6-inch lift to the Sienna.

The Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition adds roof rails that feature crossbars. The minivan includes a tow hitch. The new Sienna Woodland Edition also features a 1,500-watt power outlet for tools and appliances.

The Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition includes some cool tech upgrades like an in-dash navigation system and a 1,200-watt JBL audio system. The Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition’s off-road additions are subtle at best. Even with its 6.9-inches of ground clearance, it probably isn’t wise to put this minivan up against anything serious. It turns out adding an outdoorsy name to a trim doesn’t actually make it a real off-roader.

Is the 2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition worth buying?

The 2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition is enigmatic, to say the least. It’s clear that the automaker is trying to cash in on the off-roading vehicle craze. The Sienna, however still seems like it would be awkward doing anything other than shuttling friends or family members around town. The Woodland Edition makes a decent camper van at best.

If you’re going to pay over $46,000 for an off-roading vehicle, the 2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition is a poor choice. The minivan may have been designed to resemble an SUV, but it just doesn’t have SUV utility. Even with its upgraded gas mileage as a hybrid, the Sienna does little for the real off-roading enthusiast. It may be suitable to take the kids camping in, but why not just use a plain old Toyota Sienna and save thousands of dollars?

The 2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition is not worth buying for most consumers. Maybe you’ve got a big family or friend group that loves outdoor trips. If the Sienna Woodland Edition comes up against any actual terrain challenges, there’s little reason it would perform well. If you plan on purchasing the new 2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition, it may be a good idea to wait on some reviews first.
