The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is one of the most popular large SUVs on the road. It has Toyota’s solid reputation behind it as well as the versatility to hold a large family and all their stuff. Yet the Toyota Sequoia has surprisingly poor fuel economy and a smaller gas tank than the 2022 Ford Expedition. That means that even though the Expedition might technically cost a bit more to fill up, you’ll probably get farther in it.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is one of the most expensive SUVs to fill up right now

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is ranked number three on Consumer Reports’ list of the most expensive SUVs to fill up. That’s because the Sequoia costs $109 to fill up. It has a 26.4 gallon gas tank which gets 10 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. That means the Sequoia gets 386 miles on a full tank of gas.

To determine the cost of filling up vehicles right now, Consumer Reports used the average national gas price on April 21, 2022, which was $4.12. By applying this across a wide range of vehicles, it was able to determine the seven most expensive vehicles to fill up right now.

The 2022 Ford Expedition costs even more to fill up than the Sequoia

If you think that the cost to fill up the 2022 Toyota Sequoia is high, you’ll be even more disappointed by the 2022 Ford Expedition. the new Expedition is the most expensive SUV to fill up right now at about $117 for a fill-up. That’s partly because the Expedition has a large fuel tank, at 28.3 gallons. It gets up to 453 miles on a full tank with a range of 11 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The Sequoia is worse on gas than the Expedition

Even though the 2022 Ford Expedition is the most expensive SUV to fill up, you’ll get farther in it than you will in the Sequoia. The 2022 Expedition gets 2 more miles per gallon on the highway. Overall, the Expedition gets 16 mpg to the Sequoia’s 15 mpg. Plus, its fuel tank is slightly larger than the Sequoias. Fill up the Expedition and get 453 miles for $117. Fill up the Sequoia and go only 386 for $109. You might as well spend the extra $8 and gets an extra mile per gallon.

Of course, the 2022 Ford Expedition is slightly more expensive than the 2022 Toyota Sequoia, at a starting price of $51,110 to the Sequoia’s $50,500. Is that worth purchasing the Sequoia instead? You’ll have to calculate your driving patterns to find the answer to that.

It’s probably going to be some time before gas prices come back down. Until that happens, we’re looking at a long road with fairly expensive trips to the gas station. If you’re shopping for a new SUV and you’re torn between the 2022 Ford Expedition and the 2022 Toyota Sequoia, you may be swayed by the fact that the Ford Expedition has slightly better fuel economy than the Toyota Sequoia.
