The 2022 Toyota GR86 is easily one of the most anticipated sport compact cars within the last five years. While the Scion FR-S/Toyota 86 was a hit, there were still some things fans wanted from it that Toyota did not provide. Would this new model give fans everything they’ve been asking for? Well, not quite. The 2022 Toyota GR86 does not have a turbo, but it does have more power and a fair price.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 will have a starting MSRP of $27,700, which makes good on the promise made by the Japanese automaker that the new model would have a price under $30,000. With virtually no competition in the small rear-wheel-drive sport compact car segment, Toyota could have easily charged more for the new GR86. However, they decided to keep to the car’s spirit and let it remain as a gateway drug to inexpensive, spirited driving.

The new GR86 will be available in two trims: GR86 and GR86 Premium. Both trims will come with the newer, larger 2.4-liter boxer engine. At 228 horsepower, the new engine in the 2022 GR86 is 18% more powerful than its predecessor.

Beyond the more powerful engine, the 2022 GR86 is largely similar to the Toyota 86 that came before it. The chassis has been tuned to be more responsive, and its refreshed styling puts it more in line with the current Toyota sports car design language, but beyond those factors, the car retains much of what made it so popular in the first place.

In addition to the official MSRP, it was also revealed that the 2022 Toyota GR86 will start hitting dealerships in December 2021. Chances are, by the time you are reading this article, most dealers will have already pre-sold their first allotment of the 2022 GR86 once the vehicles begin deliveries.

If you haven’t done so yet, there may be a chance that you can be one of the first to own the new model, but you’ll have to act fast. We are anticipating that the 2022 GR86 will be just as, if not more popular than the previous model.

The new Toyota GR86 will likely be the only rear-wheel-drive sports car with an internal combustion engine under $30,000 on the market in 2022. Considering that it will almost certainly stand alone in its segment, it is bound to be highly coveted by sports car enthusiasts trying to save some cash.

Furthermore, considering the auto industry’s push toward electric vehicles, this may be the last 86 model from Toyota that isn’t a hybrid.

Is the GR86 turbo?

The 2022 Toyota GR86 does not have a turbocharger under the hood. It does have a bigger and more powerful engine. Some fans may be disappointed with that since they have wanted Toyota to boost the 86 for a long time. However, there are two reasons why Toyota will probably never turbocharge the GR86.

The first reason why Toyota will not turbocharge the GR86 is the price. Toyota’s goal for the GR86 is to make it a pure, simple, and accessible sport compact car. Adding a turbocharger and all of the ancillary components that are necessary for boost would increase the cost.

The second reason why Toyota will not turbocharge the GR86 is that they would rather you buy a Toyota GR Supra instead. A trim of the 2022 Toyota GR Supra comes with a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder inline engine. If the Toyota GR86 also had a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it could cause market confusion.

With a no turbo and a price of $27,770, the 2022 Toyota GR86 keeps things nice and simple.
