For 21 years straight, the Toyota Camry has been the top-selling car in America. Due to the Camry’s success in performance, quality, but most of all, reliability and longevity, the Camry shows no signs of stopping its success. However, according to published sales data from Good Car Bad Car, the Camry shows a significant drop in sales numbers for the 2022 model year. Here is everything you need to know about the Camry sales slump.

The Toyota Camry is still on top, even with a decline in sales

Compared to 2021 sales data, the Toyota Camry is experiencing a 23.50% decline in sales for the 2022 model year. However, the Camry is still way ahead of the competition and is holding its lead as the best-selling car in America. As for how many have sold so far this year? Currently, 135,925 units have been sold, reports Good Car Bad Car

The only “competitor” that comes close to the Camry’s sales figures is the Toyota Corolla. To date, Toyota has sold 116,832 units so far this year. The next best-selling car so far this year is the Tesla Model 3, with 90,099 units sold to date.

Despite the loss in sales, many media outlets, including U.S. News & World Report, give the 2022 Toyota Camry high marks. The outlet has complemented the car’s improved entertainment system, V6 engine option, cushy ride, and roomy interior. Combine these features with the midsize sedan’s reputation of being the longest-lasting car on the market today, and it’s no wonder why car buyers still choose the Camry over the competition.

Could the dip in sales be explained by the Tesla Model 3’s rise in sales?

While the Camry is still on top, it’s tough to ignore the loss in sales. Though, those lost sales can be attributed to a few changes in the recent automotive market. The Tesla Model 3 is experiencing a sharp increase in sales from 2021, a 74.91% sales increase, to be exact. The automotive market is moving to electric vehicles as EVs become more and more practical for Americans around the country.

For 2022, some of the only vehicles that have seen a significant increase in sales have been EVs and new SUVs, including cars like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. With crossover SUVs bringing bigger vehicles with more cargo and passenger space for around the same price as typical cars, many have made the jump to these small SUVs without any sign of turning back.

What does the future hold for the Toyota Camry?

For 2023, both hybrid and gas-powered Camry models will be available. The company shows no sign of ending the sedan’s legacy just yet, either. While the market’s major movement to electric crossover SUVs is undeniable, as long as the Camry is on top of car sales, there seems to be no sign of stopping for this legendary sedan.
