The Toyota Avalon doesn’t get the credit it deserves in the luxury car world. It may have something to do with the big European cars stealing the spotlight or being somehow less memorable than competitors like the Nissan Maxima. One of the Toyota Avalon’s finest qualities is its excellent fuel economy, especially when customers opt for the hybrid powertrain. Quite simply, the 2022 Toyota Avalon is a big sedan with a little car appetite and one of the best affordable luxury cars on the market.

The 2022 Toyota Avalon is very fuel-efficient if you option the car with a hybrid configuration. The gas-powered models typically average about 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg at highway speeds. That is commendable for a vehicle of the Avalon’s size but not remarkable. However, TrueCar states that the Toyota Avalon Hybrid XLE FWD is good for an impressive 43 mpg in the city and 44 mpg at highway speeds. That is sensational considering the size of the Toyota Avalon.

Compared to a non-hybrid competitor like the Nissan Maxima, the Avalon really shines. With its relatively thirsty V6 engine, a newer Maxima will accomplish 25 mpg combined. That pales in comparison to the 43 mpg that the Avalon is capable of achieving.

The Toyota Avalon is a good car, with a solid luxury interior and top safety scores. In fact, Consumer Reports says that the 2022 Toyota Avalon has an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award. The Toyota sedan also has a five-star crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, the big Toyota sedan only gets a four-star rating in frontal-collision protection.

In addition to being a safe car, the 2022 Toyota Avalon is still benefiting from a 2019 design refresh. The refresh not only updated the styling but also made the car more agile. The result was a sharper, better-looking Avalon.

The 2022 Toyota Avalon has an interior that Consumer Reports claims should put higher-priced competitors on alert. Avalon’s interior fit and finish are impressive, and road noise insulation is good. When paired with the interior spaciousness, the Avalon’s level of refinement is definitely up to a luxury car standard. However, fully equipping a Toyota Avalon Limited or Hybrid Limited pushes the cost up where your money might better serve you by buying a car from a more prestigious manufacturer.

Is the Toyota Avalon being discontinued?

Toyota announced that the Avalon will not be back for the model year 2023. As a result, consumers who want a new Toyota luxury sedan should strongly consider a 2022 Avalon. If the comfort is not enough to motivate buyers, the fact that such a big sedan can cruise at over 40 mpg is impressive.
