The Tesla Model Y once ruled over the electric SUV vehicle segment with an iron first. Today, plenty of competitors rival Tesla’s electric SUV. Is Volkswagen’s electric SUV model the better buy? Time for 2022 Tesla Model Y vs. 2022 Volkswagen ID.4.

The 2022 Tesla Model Y plays at the highest level

If you’re hoping to dip a toe into the world of electric SUVs, the Model Y may not be the vehicle for you. Thanks to availability issues, Model Y buyers go hard or go home. The Tesla Model Y is currently only offered in Long Range and Performance trims in the United States. That’s right, there’s no entry-level Model Y.

From an affordability standpoint, this is a huge issue for the electric SUV’s popularity. Most consumers just aren’t looking to spend $60K on an EV. It’s hard enough to convince some consumers to purchase a hybrid, let alone an innovative (and expensive) EV like the Model Y. This electric SUV only plays the game at the highest level. That being said, there is a silver lining to the Model Y’s current availability.

When Tesla first began producing EVs, they were strictly luxury sports vehicles. The EVs were incredibly quick and had mind-blowing range. The Model Y Long Range and Performance are no different.

The Tesla Model Y Long Range starts at $62,990. It has a 318-mile driving range. The Model Y Long Range can go from 0-60 miles per hour in just 4.8 seconds. The Model Y Performance starts at $67,900. It has a 303-mile driving range. The Model Y Performance goes from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds. It’s safe to say that the available Model Y trims aren’t the typical family SUVs.

The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 is practical and comfortable

Volkswagen’s electric SUV, the ID.4 is very different from the Model Y. The ID.4’s greatest strength isn’t speed, it’s comfort and ride quality. Consumer Reports gave the Volkswagen ID.4 a 100/100 score for comfort. It got a 5/5 score for predicted owner satisfaction. The ID.4 isn’t the flashiest, but it has the affordability, practicality, and comfort to please consumers.

The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro starts at $41,230. It gets 245 miles of driving range. The electric SUV makes 201 horsepower.

The ID.4 Pro S starts at $45,730. It gets 280 miles of driving range. The ID.4 Pro S makes a whopping 295 horsepower. The Pro S can’t compete with either the Model Y Long Range or Performance in terms of range and power, but affordability is a huge factor for consumers.

2022 Tesla Model Y vs. 2022 Volkswagen ID.4

The 2022 Tesla Model Y’s Long Range and Performance trims are impressive, but they’re also elusive in America. According to the Tesla website, the Long Range model has estimated delivery times between October 2022 and January 2023.

The Performance model has estimated delivery dates between June and July 2022. When it comes to the 2022 Tesla Model Y vs. 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, the German electric SUV is more affordable and readily available. The ID.4 also prioritizes comfort over range or speed. The Model Y is the better choice for better specs, but its range and speed come at a high price. The VW ID.4 is the better choice for the average consumer.
