The 2022 Tesla Model X Is 1 of the Most Expensive EVs and Ranked Dead Last on Consumer Reports

Tesla is the name in EVs. However, the controversial electric car maker wasn’t the first to make the electric car; it isn’t the best-looking EV maker and isn’t the cheapest. Even more to the point, not only is the 2022 Tesla Model X the second-most-expensive electric car on Consumer Reports, but it’s also ranked dead last for electric cars. That’s not a great look.

Is the 2022 Tesla Model X a good car? 

Consumer Reports does not recommend the 2022 Tesla Model X, which is a shame because it has many cool features and high points. However, CR gave it the lowest reliability rating possible. The Tesla Model X has seen eight recalls so far. In case you don’t know, that is a lot. 

The list of cons is as long as any car review I can recall from Consumer Reports. Like the number of recalls, Consumer Reports found eight specific aspects of the Model X that it really didn’t care for. While some of these are a result of Tesla biting off more than they could chew, like issues with the “Falcon wing” doors or trading visibility for style, there are other far more serious issues. 

The controls are critiqued as being “extremely distracting;” the ride is harsh and stiff; there’s no proper blind spot warning; the door openings are said to “require patience.” I don’t fully understand what that means, but it doesn’t sound like fun. 

Zingers like “The Model X SUV doesn’t shine brightly” or “The X seemingly sacrifices practicality for the purpose of showboating” dot the review, making it hard to find anything positive without adding a caveat. 

Is there anything good about the Tesla Model X?

Here come the caveats: CR mentions that the Tesla Model X is fast and fuel-effcient on the highest order, but unlike most electric cars, the Model X is loud. 

CR says that the falcon wing doors and the massive windshield are both notable style cues that draw people to the model but come at the cost of useability and even the driver’s sanity. 

“For example, the rear doors create an immense opening, but their time-consuming opening and closing act gets very old, very fast. Even the electrically-actuated front doors are overcomplicated, forcing constant fussing with fiddly flush door handles. And that huge windshield creates a panoramic view overhead but struggles to keep out intense sun glare.”

The good news is that the Model X is still a Tesla, meaning that it’s fast, able to use the superchargers and can take a corner surprisingly well. These compliments seem to be offered by CR sans caveat. 

How much is the 2022 Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X ain’t cheap. The Model X starts at a whopping $120,990 and tops out at $138,990. For a car this expensive, fooling around with funky door handles, annoying controls, loud road noise, and the normal hassles of EV life. 

It’s hard to get someone onboard with a six-figure car that comes with this junk. However, the Tesla brand relies on the buzz and status of these cars. So, maybe Consumer Reports issues with the Model X don’t matter for Tesla buyers.
