Not again, trucks like the Rivian R1T are making cuts and dropping features. Some options are being removed to the semiconductor chip shortage and supply chain constraints. However, the 2022 Rivian R1T is canceling options due to problems that they cause.

The 2022 Rivian R1T is officially dropping its powered tonneau cover to address its problems. It will be available later. But the camp kitchen and gear tunnel shuttle are being redesigned for unknown reasons.

The tonneau cover is an aluminum cover that slides along integrated bed rails. According to Auto Blog, customers are complaining because it doesn’t open all the way, it’s loud, and it’s jerky. This led to an investigation that discovered a design flaw that needed to be corrected.

Rivan needs to rework the failing component in a way that improves the cover’s robustness across manufacturing build variations.

But Rivian doesn’t know when this quest will be complete, so for the foreseeable future, Rivian R1T models will be built with a manual tonneau cover or no cover.

Customers waiting for their trucks can choose between not having a cover or the manual option. Also, they can wait for the powered tonneau cover to return.

The manual cover has four interlocking aluminum and composite panels that slide into integrated bed rails. It can be locked and protect the bed from light weather. It can be stored in the gear tunnel.

If you already accepted your truck with a powered cover, then it will be fixed for free. If you’re waiting on your order, you will receive a $700 refund for switching to the manual cover and $1500 if you opt for no cover.

What’s wrong with the Rivian camp kitchen?

There isn’t exactly a problem with the 2022 Rivian R1T and the optional Camp Kitchen. It’s just being pulled to make it better. The Rivin team has been testing the Camp Kitchen in various environments and discovered flaws that could be improved.

The Rivian Gear Shop was selling the Camp Kitchen x Snow Peak Package for $5,000. However, it’s been paused to make it even better for cooking in the wild.

The package included the Gear Tunnel Shuttle slide platform that the kitchen sits on and an integrated 30-piece Snow Peak dishware set. However, this is odd because no one was complaining about it.

Will the R1T’s features get more expensive?

It’s possible that the Camp Kitchen and power-folding tonneau cover could be more expensive once they return for the 2022 Rivian R1T. For 2023, the design could be reconfigured without integrated side rails. This could mean that the truck bed is benign redesigned.

More information will be shared about the Camp Kitchen once the updates have been finalized. The new setup will come with updated pricing. However, those who ordered the original version will have their price protected.

It feels a little early for the Rivian R1T to be redesigned. The 2023 model is expected to be carried over primarily. However, we hope the larger battery pack arrives to increase the range to 400 miles.

Stay tuned for the latest Rivian updates. If you have the Camping Kitchen, then we’re jealous of your ability to cook out there!
