Is the 2022 Range Rover Better Than the 2021 Mercedes G-Wagon?
The all-new 2022 Range Rover is loaded with features that make it as luxurious as it is capable. One of its biggest competitors is the highly popular 2021 Mercedes G-Wagon. The G 550 SUV from one of the most prestigious luxury automakers in the world is tough to beat. The new Land Rover Range Rover model might be the only thing that can stand up to it. How does the new model measure up to the G-Wagon?
What tech is in the 2022 Range Rover?
The fifth generation of Range Rover brings the sleek and stylish modern look of this luxury SUV to a whole new level. The exterior is carefully designed to lead your eye across its three lines on the roof, waistline, and sill. Standard on the autobiography and First Edition models is the Meridian Signature sound system. It uses 35-speakers throughout the cabin to cancel exterior noise and create one of the quietest interiors ever.
It also gets a suite of technology as luxurious as you’d expect from an SUV costing north of $100,000. The Range Rover will get software updates using Land Rover’s Software-Over-The-Air system, so it’ll always be at its best. In addition, features like Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and a new semi-floating 13.8-inch Interactive Driver Display are included. Coming in the 2023 model year is a plug-in hybrid variant, with an electric range of up to 62 miles.
How capable is the new Land Rover Range Rover model?
The new generation of Range Rover is the first to feature Dynamic Response Pro. It’s a new active 48-volt electronic roll control system with a torque capacity of over 1,000 lb-ft fed into the rollover protection system. Combining air springs volumes with twin-valve dampers, the Range Rover’s independent air suspension effectively isolates the cabin from surface imperfections more effectively than ever.
The Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) transmission is controlled by Land Rover’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) system. This system monitors grip levels and driver inputs 100 times a second. The new Land Rover Range Rover model also comes with an Active Locking Rear Differential, which optimizes traction during cornering. It’s especially useful for off-road driving and slippery surfaces.
Which engines are available on the 2022 Range Rover?
The new 2022 Range Rover has two engine options throughout its lineup. The first is the mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged I6 and the second, a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. We’re sure you can figure out which of the two gets better gas mileage. The mild-hybrid engine produces 395-hp compared to the larger V8 engine’s 523-hp.
The two lowest trim levels, P400 SE and P400 SE LWB are the only ones that come standard with the mild-hybrid engine. Every other model in the new Range Rover in the Land Rover SUV lineup comes standard with a V8. Therein lies the issue, the already expensive base model gets astronomically more so with the addition of a more powerful engine for this luxury SUV.
How does the 2021 Mercedes G-Wagon compare?
The stylish interior of the G-Wagon compliments the classic exterior aesthetic nicely. The available technology is similar to that of the Range Rover and includes things like dual 12.3-inch displays, steering-wheel touch controls, and voice control for navigation. It measures up pretty well to the new Range Rover, going pound-for-pound with its loads of features.
Like the Range Rover, before it was a style icon it was a performance machine. The available 19- or 20-inch wheels start your all-terrain journey, backed up by 4-wheel drive and three lockable differentials. Climbing, fording depth, and more give this off-road beast more than enough capability.
What engine does the G-Wagon have?
The 2021 Mercedes G-Wagon comes with a 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine. It’s capable of producing up to 416-hp, which slots in slightly above the Range Rover’s mild-hybrid. It can move from 0 mph to 60 in just 5.6 seconds, which is actually slower than the Range Rover’s 4.4 seconds.
The G-Wagon’s V8 engine is just about the middle-road between the two Range Rover engines. Having fewer options is always a negative attribute, so the points definitely go to Land Rover’s SUV in that aspect. Another disadvantage to the Mercedes G-Wagon is the price.
Which one costs more?
Both of these two vehicles will cost you a pretty penny to own. Each one has a few different options that range from expensive to extremely expensive. The Range Rover wins in this category again, because it has more options than Mercedes’ offering.

Though the Range Rover has four models that start at a cheaper price than every G-Wagon, its highest trims get far more pricey. The G-Wagon starts high but doesn’t go up too much, mostly due to only having one trim level. Instead of offering multiple trims like traditional vehicles, the G-Wagon simply offers optional packages for a set price. Any of them can be added to the base price of the vehicle.
These two vehicles are both highly capable and luxurious SUVs, as they have been for a long time. Land Rover gives us the next generation of Range Rover and takes strides toward establishing itself firmly at the top. The G-Wagon lacks variety but makes up for it with up-to-date technology and performance features. The new Land Rover SUV brings updated offering provides most of the same, sometimes at a better price.
