Someone needs to warn the 2022 Ram 1500 that rivals are starting to catch up. We aren’t dissing the 2022 Ram 1500. It’s still an excellent truck. However, it has the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra catching up to its level of greatness.

Is the 2022 Ram 1500 still the best truck?

Maybe. The 2022 Ram 1500 still flexes with its outstanding ride quality and enhanced tech. But it’s been three years since it was completely redesigned, giving rivals such as the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tacoma time to catch up.

You can get started in a new Ram 1500 for about $34,000. The 2022 Ford F-150 undercuts this price with an MSRP of $29,640. Also, the 2022 Toyota Tundra starts at around $37,645. It remains competitively priced based on the standard features that are included.

Where does the Ram 1500 excel?

The 2022 Ram 1500 continues the tradition of having a superb ride quality. Moving away from leaf springs for a coil-sprung rear suspension was an excellent choice. It absorbs impacts well without a rough ride that’s expected from large trucks.

Plus, the insulated cabin keeps wind and road noise out. But you can still hear the pleasing rumbles from the V8 engine. The steering is seedy, the brakes are confident, and the handling is responsive.

However, the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra have followed in its tracks. The coil-sprung suspension in the Tundra is very similar. Plus, it can be upgraded with an air suspension that can lift and lower the truck to clear obstacles or make loading easier.

The Ram 1500 gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway. This is better than rivals. But soon, the electric Ford F-150 Lightning will be available. Plus, the EPA ratings for the Toyota Tundra Hybrid haven’t been released.

With the Ram 1500, you can tow up to 12,750 lbs, which is excellent. The Ford F-150 can tow up to 14,000 lbs, while the Toyota Tundra can tow up to 12,000 lbs. The F-150 and Ram 1500 both include 360-degree surround-view camera systems, but the F-150 provides a Pro Trailer Backup Assist system.

Does the Ram 1500 still have the best tech?

The 2022 Ram 1500 still provides advanced tech. It was the first truck to incorporate a massive 12-inch touchscreen. Now the Ford F-150 offers a 15.5-inch screen, and the Tundra offers the best-in-class 14-inch touchscreen.

But where is the wireless phone charger? Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, but the Ford F-150 offers wireless connectivity for these systems. But the Ram 1500 did gain the new Uconnect 5 software, which should be much faster and more efficient.

The Toyota Tundra has an edge with its 12.3-inch Multi-Information display with digital gauges. The Ford F-150 has an optional 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster too. However, the Ram 1500 offers a new heads-up display.

Also, the Ram 1500 doesn’t include many standard safety features. You can opt for blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The Tundra includes standard forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The Ram 1500 could still have the most comfortable ride and interior, but rivals are quickly catching up. It may be time for the Ram 1500 to have a mid-cycle update to get ahead of the game again.
