The Nissan Frontier has long been recognized as a competent mid-size truck. But, before the introduction of the 2022 model, it was also one of the oldest trucks on the market. And frankly, it was beginning to show. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, as buyers of the Frontier tend to enjoy the charm of an old-school truck. For 2022, some of that quirkiness has been retained while key updates have been applied, including in the suspension. Additionally, a range of trims is still offered. Including a younger sibling to the top-trim PRO-4X, the Frontier PRO-X.

The Nissan Frontier PRO-X is a mid-size truck that offers some off-road capability. It is worth noting that it is only available with rear-wheel drive and as a crew cab. But, it comes with the same features as the SV trim along with Bilstein off-road shocks.

Additionally, the PRO-X can tow up to 6,470 pounds. And it has a 9.0-inch touchscreen for added connectivity. It also stands out from other Frontier models thanks to its 17.0-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. And, like other Frontier trucks, it comes with a 3.8-liter V6 engine which makes 310 horsepower and 281 pound-foot of torque. Giving this mid-size truck ample power.

With the availability of the Frontier PRO-4X, shoppers may be wondering why they should opt for the PRO-X. The 2022 PRO-X is cheaper than the PRO-4X while still offering some sought-after off-road features.

The PRO-X is a lot like the Toyota Tacoma PreRunner. A 2WD truck that has been upgraded to offer some off-road and desert running ability. The PRO-X features a Dana rear axle and a skid plate for added protection. But, this truck does not offer a rear locking differential.

The Frontier PRO-4X and PRO-X are similar mid-size trucks in a lot of ways. But the PRO-4X features 4WD and more serious off-road features, like a locking differential. Additionally, the more expensive PRO-4X has three skid plates for even more under vehicle protection.

Another feature of the PRO-4X is an off-road drive mode which can work with the 360-degree camera, according to MotorTrend. Which will help when it comes to navigating tight trails or big obstacles.

Both trucks are worthy of consideration

Both the 2022 Frontier PRO-4X and 2022 Frontier PRO-X are worthy trucks. If you are not located in a place that gets a lot of snow and do not require 4WD, the PRO-X is a good way to get added capability at a lower cost.

Better yet, these mid-size trucks offer a range of different packages to provide you with more convenience and comfort. So, it really depends on what your needs and expectations are from your new truck. Do you need something that is ready for the trails, or, do you just want a Frontier that looks more aggressive and offers more ability for light off-roading. For 2022, Nissan give you the choice.
