For many shoppers looking for a mid-size truck, off-road capability is at the top of the list of features that they want. The 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X is the answer to those needs, as it offers legitimate off-road ability. For 2022, Nissan made a variety of updates to the Frontier, but the PRO-4X is still a mid-size truck that is ready to take the road less traveled. Better yet, it is more affordable than other off-road trucks like the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. But the question remains, should you buy the Frontier PRO-4X?

What is the Frontier PRO-4X?

The PRO-4X is the off-road designation for the Nissan Frontier. It still features the standard V6 engine, but also comes with four-wheel drive and other off-road equipment. These include things like Bilstein off-road shocks and a 360-degree camera to help you keep moving forward when on the trail.

Additionally, the 2022 Frontier PRO-4X boasts multiple skid plates in key areas. These will protect vital components on your mid-size truck, and that is something that is likely to be appreciated. And, as a sign of how modern this pickup is, off-road gauges are featured. These gauges will display important information as you navigate the trail or backwoods.

Is the Nissan Frontier good off-road?

With the PRO-4X model, the Frontier is certainly ready to handle the road less traveled. This mid-size truck even boasts an electronic locking rear differential. This feature will deliver equal power to both rear wheels, allowing you to boost traction to get out of tight spots.

Other notable features of the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X include its standard all-terrain tires. While you can always add beefier tires if you choose, the A/T tires are certainly a welcome addition. These tires are fixed to 17-inch wheels finished in dark aluminum.

Should you buy the 2022 Frontier?

The 2022 Nissan Frontier has a starting MSRP of $28,690. This helps this truck to be a more affordable option to buyers. In order to get the PRO-4X model, you will have to spend more. The PRO-4X is available only to crew cab Frontiers. It has an entry price of $38,120. But, that does get you things like standard 4WD and solid off-road ability. Plus, the Frontier PRO-4X is just a sharp-looking pickup.

It features special PRO-4X badging and the interior is designed to be reflective of this mid-size truck’s capability. It is worth noting that the Frontier may not be as refined as other trucks. But, according to Car and Driver, the changes Nissan made to this truck are appreciated. The suspension has been refined and now a V6 engine is standard. So you do not have to pay extra in order to get more power.

The Frontier does still ride on a platform that dates back to the early 2000s, but this is no longer a truck that is nearly two decades old. And with the Frontier PRO-4X, you will have a pickup that is ready to go just about anywhere you want it to.
