The 2022 Nissan Frontier may be in its third generation, but this mid-size truck still feels slightly old-school. And that is due to one notable feature, a standard V6 engine. Instead of going with a smaller turbocharged engine, this truck still has a naturally-aspirated V6, and it is standard across the lineup. It is worth noting that this pickup has not had a major update since 2005, and that may explain why this vehicle feels notably old-school. But, apparently, that is not a big deal to some buyers, because the Frontier has quickly become a fast seller.

What engine does the 2022 Nissan Frontier have?

The 2022 Frontier packs a 3.8-liter V6 engine under the hood. With this engine, the Frontier benefits from 310 horsepower and 281 pound-foot of torque. And that means that the Frontier has some legitimate power for a mid-size truck. The engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, which ensures that you can get smooth delivery of power.

Additionally, when properly equipped, the 2022 Frontier can tow up to 6,720 lbs and haul up to 1,610 lbs. Because of this, the Frontier can be used as a true truck. And that is something that some buyers are likely to appreciate.

Is the 2022 Frontier new?

While this may be the third generation of the Frontier, there are some things that show its age. For instance, this pickup borrows its steering wheel from the Nissan Pathfinder and the gear shifter is a simple mechanism mounted to the middle console. Where other trucks have shifted to dial-shifters, the Frontier has not.

That said, the 2022 Frontier is essentially an all-new truck. It has been redesigned, boasts a new V6 engine, and comes with more features than the outgoing model. Plus, the suspension has also been revised which should lead to some more comfortable on-road driving.

Can the Nissan Frontier go off-road?

When properly equipped, the Nissan Frontier can be an off-road truck. With the PRO-4X model, the Frontier boasts four-wheel drive, an electronically locking rear differential, and Bilstein shocks. This means that the Frontier is ready to take the road less traveled, especially with its available skid plates.

In terms of looks, the new Frontier may not look as off-road-ready as rivals such as the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, but it is also cheaper. When you compare pricing, the Frontier is a truck that offers serious affordability. And that is clear when you consider things like its standard V6 engine which can make more power than the V6 found in the Toyota Tacoma.

Is the Nissan Frontier a truck?

The Nissan Frontier is still a body-on-frame truck. It offers all of the capabilities that you would expect from a mid-size pickup, but it does have some downfalls. According to Car and Driver, the rear can feel fairly cramped, and the interior does not feel as high-end as other trucks.

But, considering you can get the 2022 Frontier for under $30,000, some of these trade-offs may be worth it.
