It’s time to check out the 2022 Mazda CX-9. For 2022, the largest Mazda SUV is spicing things up by adding more value while lowering the price. So with the Mazda CX-9, you will get more for less, but let’s see if it’s worth it.

Is the 2022 Mazda CX-9 worth buying?

Yes, if you want a little more space without giving up power or luxury comfort, then the 2022 Mazda CX-9 is the perfect option to consider. This is especially true if you live in an area that receives inclement weather because all-wheel drive is now standard for each model.

The Mazda CX-9 starts at about $36,505, and this price includes the destination fee. This is $455 less than the outgoing model when equipped with optional AWD. But prices are a little higher than the models with front-wheel drive.

What’s new for the 2022 CX-9?

Aside from standard AWD, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 also gained a new trim level. The Mazda CX-9 Touring Plus trim serves as an affordable mid-level option. It provides more convenience features without the need to move up to the more expensive Grand Touring trim.

The Touring Plus trim builds upon the Touring trim by adding the Premium Package. Then it adds ventilated front seats, memory settings for the driver’s seat, a gloss black grille, aluminum roof rails, and a frameless rear-view mirror.

For some context, here are the Mazda CX-9 trim levels:

  • Maxda CX-9 Sport – $36,505
  • Mazda CX-9 Touring – $38,655
  • Mazda CX-9 Touring Plus – $42,885
  • Mazda CX-9 Carbon Edition – $44,805
  • Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring – $45,665

The Touring Premium package can be added for an additional $2,080. So, upgrade cost of about $4,000 to move up from the Touring trim to the Touring Plus trim is pretty reasonable.

Some people may feel like making the FWD models unavailable isn’t the best move. Especially those in warmer climates who don’t need AWD. Plus, adding AWD can lower the fuel economy. However, it’s actually a beneficial move.

The Mazda i-Activ AWD system reportedly enhances driving dynamics, handling, and vehicle control while drivers get to enjoy the experience on more types of terrain and conditions. The system continuously monitors weight distribution and shifts power to wheels that need it most.

This provides drivers with an instant response to their inputs. Plus, each CX-9 model comes with G-Vectoring Control Plus and Off-Road Traction Assist.

How does the 2022 CX-9 perform?

The 2022 Mazda CX-9 comes with a 2.5-liter turbo-four that pumps out 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. With premium fuel, you can increase these figures to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The CX-9 can accelerate from 0 to 60 in about 7.1 seconds

While it may not have as responsive steering compared to other Mazda models, the CX-9 still provides an athletic response with superior corning control. It’s light on its feet and doesn’t feel like a larger model.

The suspension is a bit firm, but most impacts are absorbed with ease. Also, the interior provides a luxurious sense of quiet. Best of all, the Mazda CX-9 is easy to maneuver in tight city areas.
