Comparing sports cars is a fairly straight-ahead business. The more exciting the driving experience, the better the sports car it probably is. However, comparing two sports sedans like the 2022 Kia Stinger and the 2022 Audi A4 is a bit trickier. These two sedans have luxury elements and sporty features that tend to work against the other. Consumer Reports certainly had thoughts between the two luxury sport sedans.
While the 2022 Kia Stinger is competitively priced and a known thrill, the 2022 Audi A4 has time and experience behind it. Audi is a tough competitor when it comes to performance and a luxurious cabin. Although both cars are highly recommended by Consumer Reports, only one can prevail. Here’s a hint; it’s the Audi A4.

The 2022 Kia Stinger is a welcomed addition to the sports sedan world
- Pros: Attractive starting price of $33,090, tons of power, and sharp handling
- Cons: Stiff ride and poor visibility
The 2022 Kia Stinger is a thrilling ride from an unexpected source. Kia managed to build a lovely sport sedan that gives off old-school GT vibes almost. This tight handling sports sedan landed a 71/100 on Consumer Reports, which is up from the 2021 model’s 68/100.
The 2022 Kia Stinger has two power options; the 300-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the 368-hp 3.3-liter turbocharged V6. CR recommends the up-ticket 3.3-liter motor. Overall, the 2022 Kia Stinger is a nice-looking, nice-driving sports sedan that leans a touch further into the sports part than the luxury part.
Consumer Reports loves the 2022 Audi A4
- Pros: well-rounded sports sedan that balances a luxury cabin with a sporty feel
- Cons: Cabin controls are not as intuitive as you might like
The 2022 Audi A4 has emerged triumphant over nearly all of its sports sedan rivals like BMW and Mercedes. The A4 is hard to beat due to how nicely it blends comfort and excitement. Depending on the trim, the same turbocharged 2.0-liter powers the Audi A4 with a snappy and smooth 201 hp or 261 hp. There is also a 349-hp turbo 3.0-liter available in the S4 trim.
The 2022 Audi A4 continues to impress and satisfy owners by providing a sharp and thrilling drive, comfy cabin, and plenty of new tech. It is no surprise that Consumer Reports gave it an 87/100.
2022 Audi A4 vs. 2022 Kia Stinger: Driving
The Audi A4 is hard to beat in this category. As Consumer Reports puts it, “The A4 impresses with its rock-solid body. This is a very satisfying car to drive, with nimble, secure handling by virtue of minimal body roll and quick turn-in response.” From the road to the track, the A4 can chop corners like nobody’s business.
On the other hand, the 2022 Kia Stinger is no slouch in the corners either. The Stinger shows little body roll in the corners. It is a nimble sports sedan with an eagerness to dive headlong into corners. When tested on the track, Consumer Reports called the Kia Stinger’s handling “playful” and “agile.”
Both cars offer great powerplants that can hang with the best of sports sedans. Both models start with powerplants that offer performance and speed. However, the base model Audi A4 starts with the 201-hp turbo 2.0-liter, while the 2022 Kia Stinger comes out of the gate with a 300-hp 2.5-liter powerplant.
2022 Kia Stinger vs. 2022 Audi A4: Safety features
The A4 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick. Meanwhile, the 2022 Kia Stinger is hot on its heel with the same safety designation.
The Audi A4 comes standard with forward-collision warning and city-speed emergency braking with pedestrian detection. More cash will get you up the trim line, which includes blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning. The highest trim offers highway-speed automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
The Stinger’s standard safety and convenience features for 2022 include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, driver-attention warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blindspot warning and rear cross-traffic warning were already standard for the previous model.
2022 Kia Stinger Advantages
The Kia Stinger is a great-looking and exciting car. Although Consumer Reports has some beef with some aspects of the Kia, it still beats the Audi in a couple of ways. For one, the engine options are cooler and more powerful. While the most powerful engine can get pricey, the base-level 2.5-liter is a great engine and makes nearly 100 hp more than the Audi’s base trim.
For two, the Kia Stinger is newer. There is a freshness to the car that the A4 simply can’t compete with. Every time I see a Stinger out in the world, I take note. Not just because it looks good, but because my eyes still aren’t used to them like they are the A4. The A4 hasn’t seen a major exterior update since 2019. This freshness is a serious advantage for anyone wanting something more unique from their sports sedan.
2022 Audi A4 Advantages
As far as Consumer Reports is concerned, the A4 is a better car all around than the Kia Stinger. This comes from its well-rounded nature and seamless blending of sporty driving and luxury comfort. This is not an easy balance to strike.
Although the Kia Stinger’s main advantage is its newness, the Audi has familiarity behind it. This may not be as exciting, but it does help people to feel more comfortable with their cars.
Which sports sedan is the right fit for you?
There are plenty of differences between these two 2022 sports sedans. However, the Audi A4 is clearly the better of the two cars. While the objectivity of Consumer Reports shows a pretty lop-sided comparison, the Kia Stinger has plenty of fight in it to stay in the running. Thankfully, both cars are good enough to be recommended by CR, so the choice is yours. If you want a thrill, the Stinger might better provide that, but if comfort and consistency is your bag, the Audi A4 is the clear path.
