The 2022 Kia EV9 electric SUV reveal is coming up soon, and there isn’t much information yet. As of now, we know the EV9 will be part of the 11 new electric Kia vehicles by 2026. Hyundai, Kia’s parent company is establishing a similar initiative, planning to have 23 new electric cars by 2025. Both brands have an upcoming electric SUV announcement, but first up is the EV9.

The sizeable electric SUV will premiere on November 17 at AutoMobility LA. Kia has released concept images ahead of the official reveal of the vehicle. The debut will be at the LA Convention Center on the 17th, but Kia has released a few new statements about the vehicle.

“The Kia Concept EV9 is an intriguing glimpse into the future direction of the all-electric SUV, combining progressive design, state-of-the-art tech, and an advanced all-electric powertrain in one pioneering package,” Kia said in its press release on November 11. It then went on to say, “The renderings illustrate a highly conceptual cabin that has been honed to give the driver and passengers a light, flexible, and adaptive interior space as the experience of the journey evolves. A stunning interactive ultra-wide display and a radical new take on the traditional steering wheel are just two of the standout interior features.” We’ll find out more next week when the EV9 comes to life.

What do we know about the 2022 Kia EV9?

From the photo of a silhouette Kia shared on Instagram, we can see the boxy shape is similar to that of a Telluride. The EV9 will not be a rebadged electric Telluride due to its platform. The electric platform the EV9 uses is not shared with the Kia Telluride, which tells us it will be a completely different vehicle, at least visually.

According to Motor1, the EV9 will use an iteration of the E-GMP electric platform. The SUV will offer a single and dual motor powertrain option, along with all-wheel drive. The 2022 Kia EV6 has two available battery packs, which provide up to 300 miles of range. The E-GMP electric platform is already good for 577 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque with the Kia EV6 GT.

What could it share with the Kia Telluride?

First and foremost, based on the teaser we’ve seen, the 2022 Kia EV9 seems to get its design from the Telluride. The large box shape going into the rear of the vehicle is very similar to the Kia SUV. Not only is the body likely to be shaped like the Telluride, but the wheels and light designs could find inspiration too. The vehicle will not look the same, as the EV9 has significantly more curves and shapes and looks more futuristic.

Something we would love to see on the electric SUV is the Nightfall Edition that Telluride uses. The Nightfall Edition adds gloss black exterior trim and roof rails, which would add to the EV9’s modernized aesthetic. It also adds bigger black-finish alloy wheels, which we think would look great under an electric SUV. The other black accents make the Telluride look a little more relaxed and less like a family vehicle.

Though we don’t know much about what to expect from the upcoming announcement, it’s hard not to get excited about a new electric SUV reveal. Kia has been churning out award-winning vehicles for a while, and entering the fully electric market is enormous. The 2022 Kia EV9 will surely be the next big name in the large electric SUV segment, taking on vehicles like the Tesla Model X and Audi e-tron.
