As the electric vehicle market continues to expand and become more popular, manufacturers find themselves competing against an established EV company, Tesla. Since 2012, Tesla has been producing mainstream EV models, like the Tesla Model S. Recently, Kia entered the electrified game with the 2022 Kia EV6 and it competes against the Tesla Model Y, another electric SUV. So, how does the EV6 stack up against the Model Y?

Is the Kia EV6 better than the Tesla Model Y?

Competing with Tesla is no easy task, considering the brand is established in the EV market, but the 2022 Kia EV6 does give it a run for its money. In terms of pricing, the EV6 starts at around $40,000. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y costs over $60,000 for the base trim level. So, the Kia electric SUV beats out the Tesla in this category.

The pricing of the Tesla is a little bit disappointing, Cars Direct notes that Tesla can sometimes struggle with build quality. When paying luxury prices for a vehicle, you expect a vehicle to have good fit and finish. And the new Model Y does not necessarily excel in this area.

Is the 2022 EV6 bigger than the Tesla Model Y?

In terms of sizing, these two EV models are fairly similar. But, the Model Y does make better use of its interior offering more rear headroom and legroom. Additionally, the Model Y boasts more cargo space at 76.2 cubic feet while the Kia EV6 only has 50.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

That said, exterior dimensions are pretty much the same. This allows these two vehicles to thrive in urban environments with tight spaces.

Which EV SUV has the best range?

Again, the Tesla does beat out the Kia in terms of range. But, with certain models, the difference is not that much. The maximum range of the 2022 Kia EV6 is 310 miles, while the Model Y Long Range has a driving distance of 318 miles.

Although the Tesla may offer more range, it is over $20,000 more expensive than the EV6. So, some of the value proposition may be lost on the Model Y.

Does the 2022 Kia EV6 have good tech?

When it comes to tech, many know that Tesla is a pioneer. But, this technology can be difficult to use for some drivers who may be looking for a more traditional experience. Critics note that the EV6’s infotainment is easy to use and does not feel too overwhelming. And that is a plus for those coming from a traditional gasoline-powered car.

Better yet, Kia is expected to release a performance version of the EV6 known as the EV6 GT. This model will compete against the Model Y Performance for providing a sporty and engaging drive, but it is not yet released.

Should you buy the Tesla Model Y or Kia EV6?

In the end, this question really comes down to budget and preference. If you want to drive a luxury vehicle with the latest tech, opt for the Tesla Model Y electric SUV. But, the 2022 Kia EV6 should still be on your radar. It is cheaper, offers a similar range, and comes backed by a traditional automotive brand.
