The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Got Embarrassed by the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage On Consumer Reports

The Jeep Wrangler has never been known for its face-ripping grip or neck-snapping power, but most people don’t care. We buy Jeeps because we love what they represent and how they make us feel. Well, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler isn’t making Consumer Reports feel great. In fact, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler nearly lost to the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage on the Consumer Reports road test. Yeesh! *pulls at the neck of my t-shirt*

Consumer Reports hated the 2022 Jeep Wrangler and the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage

Typically, even cars that ultimately fail the overall score from Consumer Reports can do well on the driving test. That is not the case for these two very different yet almost similar vehicles. If you think it’s unfair to judge the Wrangler next to Mirage based on classification, the 2022 BMW X5 (SUV) scored 2nd place of everything CR tested in 2022 with a 98/100 on the road test.

For reference, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler scored a 36/100, while the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage landed a 29/100 on the road test.

Are Jeep Wranglers worth it?

It should come as no surprise that the 2022 Jeep Wrangler scored poorly on CR’s road test. It barely has a roof, the doors slide off, and it is built only for bouldering and mud riding. No part of the Wrangler was meant for the tarmac, yet it is a massively popular SUV.

I love the Wrangler. I drove one for 11 years. It was great to look at, fun to drive, and it made me feel cool. However, they are horribly impractical, uncomfortable, and, let’s just say, safer cars have been built.

If you know anything about Consumer Reports’ preferences, you’ll know that those three things are killers for a CR score. Not to mention, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler is still horrible on gas, can’t take a corner for nothing, and is slow. Again, if we were talking about an SUV for off-road adventures, I’d argue the Wrangler remains the crowned King. However, the Wrangler simply wasn’t built to do well when it comes to road tests.

Is the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage a good car?

The Perfect Jeep Wrangler Is 20 Years Old

According to Consumer Reports, it isn’t. Overall, the Mirage landed a 33/100, which means its abysmal road-test score was almost as good as its overall score.

The tester, as Consumer Reports said it best when they said, “the Mitsubishi Mirage lives up to its name. While its low sticker price and good fuel economy of 37 mpg overall may conjure up an inviting image of a good, economical runabout, that illusion quickly dissipates into the haze when you drive this tiny, regrettable car.”

Although the Mitsubishi Mirage may be a “tiny, regrettable car,” it never promised to be anything other than the cheapest car on the market for Americans. Honestly, it doesn’t deserve so much hate when it perfectly delivers on its only promise.

That being said, the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage is slow, clumsy, and cheap. Buyers simply don’t seem to enjoy it. Consumer Reports gave it a two out of five on predicted customer satisfaction based on polling.

Are Jeeps reliable?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage was made for one purpose; to be cheap. And, it is. However, the Wrangler isn’t cheap at. In fact, they are extremely pricer given their limitations. CR gave the 2022 Wrangler a two out of five on predicted reliability to make matters worse. Meanwhile, the Mirage, which starts at nearly $15k cheaper, earned a three out of five on reliability.

At the risk of contradicting myself, even though the Jeep might ultimately be a worse car for driving on the road daily, I would still prefer it to the Mirage. The Mirage nor the Jeep Wrangler were made to be good cars. However, the Wrangler makes you feel like you spent your money on something good – or at least cool.
