The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is one of the best new 3-row SUVs. Part of its draw (aside from the fact that it’s a revived throwback to an old favorite) is its size. The Wagonner is enormous, rivaling SUVs like the Chevy Suburban and Toyota Sequoia. Yet there’s one major downfall to the Jeep Wagoneer, and it’s its fuel economy. Is the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer fuel economy really that bad, and is there anything you can do to soften the blow to your wallet?

What is the gas mileage on the new Jeep Wagoneer?

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer gets 15 mpg, according to Car and Driver. That’s not great, even for a large SUV. In fact, fueleconomy.gov says that you’ll pay $7,500 over the course of five years more than you’d pay for the average new car. Sure, the Wagoneer is a lot bigger than the average new car, but consider this: the 2022 Chevy Suburban will only cost you an extra $6,500 over those same five years. Perhaps $1,000 over 60 months isn’t a big deal, but it is worth noting.

You’ll likely spend about $3,350 per year in fuel costs with the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. It will cost you approximately $5.59 to drive 25 miles, which is kind of a lot when you think about that away travel soccer game. Add in the fact that it will cost you over $100 to fill up your gas tank right now, and you’re probably realizing you’re not going to save any money on gas in the 2022 Wagoneer.

What gas does the Wagoneer take?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Battles the 2022 Cadillac Escalade and 2022 Lincoln Navigator for Luxury Status

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer’s fuel tank capacity is 26.5 gallons. It takes premium gasoline and its 2-wheel-drive model has a 6.4-liter 8-cylinder engine. Its 4-wheel-drive engine is a 5.7-liter V8 that makes 392 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque.

Car and Driver notes that as wonderful as the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer may be (that’s the luxury version of the Wagoneer), its fuel economy doesn’t stand a chance next to similarly-sized rivals. They say it is “less efficient than other American luxury SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.” There’s a very good reason for that – the Grand Wagoneer’s fuel economy is even worse than the regular old Wagoneer, at 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

How much does the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer cost?

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer price starts at $57,995. It’s incredibly nice (though of course, it’s not quite as luxurious as the Grand Wagoneer). It has a well-appointed, leather interior, a digital instrument cluster, and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen that can be upgraded to a 12-inch screen. It can also seat up to 8 with the right configuration, though second-row captain’s chairs only allow up to 7 passengers.

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer fuel economy is pretty bad, but perhaps that isn’t enough of a reason to make you look elsewhere. After all, it’s a brand new gorgeous SUV with a lot to offer. If you can deal with emptying your wallet every time you hit the gas station, perhaps you’ll still love the new Wagoneer.
