2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Debut: Two-Row and 4xe Plug-In Hybrid

While Jeep unveiled the three-row Grand Cherokee SUV earlier this year, the automaker hasn’t yet debuted the regular, two-row version. However, the wait is nearly over, for Jeep will debut the 2022 Grand Cherokee on September 29, 2021. The automaker will also reveal the details about a Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid model.

While Jeep unveiled the three-row Grand Cherokee L SUV earlier this year, the automaker hasn’t yet debuted the regular, two-row version. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee two-row was supposed to debut in August at the 2021 New York Auto Show. Due to the coronavirus (COVD-19) pandemic, that event was canceled. However, the wait is nearly over, for Jeep will debut the 2022 Grand Cherokee on September 29, 2021. The automaker will also reveal the details about a Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid model.

Jeep posted a teaser video of the 2022 Grand Cherokee on its Instagram account. There is not much to glean from the video. It starts with old footage of the reveal of the first Grand Cherokee. “In 1992, the Grand Cherokee broke boundaries.” The video then cuts to a shot of the 2022 Grand Cherokee breaking through a pane of glass. “30 years later, it’s ready to break them again.”

So how will the Grand Cherokee break new ground again? While Jeep has been light on specifics, what we do know is that the Grand Cherokee will offer the new 4xe, its first-ever plug-in hybrid model. The Grand Cherokee 4xe is expected to have the same hybrid powertrain as the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. Combining power from a 2.0-liter engine and two electric motors, the hybrid powertrain doles out 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain also provides 21 models of electric-only range. In addition to the hybrid powertrain, the 2022 Grand Cherokee will offer a 290-hp V6 engine and a 357-hp V8 engine.

Like many other automakers, Jeep is making a push to go electric with its model lineup. The Jeep 4xe models are a big part of this plan. Within the next several years, Jeep expects that around 70% of its sales will come from electric vehicles. By 2025, Jeep will offer an all-electric 4xe model for every one of its SUV categories.

The limited view of the Grand Cherokee in the teaser video leaves a lot to the imagination. However, spy shots of the Grand Cherokee two-row revealed a sleek design that’s similar to the longer Grand Cherokee L, but only sportier. The Grand Cherokee features the iconic Jeep grille, with a sporty lower grille opening. On both sides of the grille are sleek headlights. Also, compared to the Grand Cherokee L, the Grand Cherokee two-row has a smaller greenhouse, as well as a unique floating-pillar design.
