There are plenty of great things about the Jeep Compass. It’s a highly competitive compact SUV in a crowded segment. Plus, the 2022 Jeep Compass received tremendous upgrades. However, the Compass could have one potential drawback to consider.

The 2022 Jeep Compass could use an engine update

According to Cars.com, one potentially frustrating issue with the 2022 Jeep Compass is the engine. It seems to be the one thing that wasn’t refreshed for the 2022 model year, and they refer to it as the Achilles’ hill.

That’s because it’s pretty much one of the only drawbacks to consider. The sole powertrain in the Compass is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 177 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.7 seconds and is often referred to as lethargic. But that’s plenty of power for merging into traffic and passing people on the highway. Cars.com also noted that the engine is loud, sounds strained, and jerky transmission shifts.

Plus, the Compass is thirsty. It gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and up to 31 mpg on the highway. This is behind rivals like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

The 2022 Compass as an incredible interior

The powertrain shouldn’t be a deal-breaker for the 2022 Jeep Compass. It just received a brand new interior design with higher quality materials. Cheap and hard plastics were replaced with soft-touched surfaces, dashboard stitching, and plenty of leather with a two-tone color scheme.

There is enough space for four adult adults to fit comfortably. The seats are well-padded and supportive for longer trips. But backseat space and cargo are average. You can access up to 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats with up to 59.8 cubic feet total.

An 8.4-inch infotainment screen comes standard, but you can upgrade to a larger 10.1-inch unit. It’s powered by the latest Uconnect 5 software, meaning the graphics look great and the system works quickly.

Other notable tech upgrades include wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated seats, a hands-free power liftgate, and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof!

How capable is the 2022 Compass?

The 2022 Jeep Compass has some pretty good off-roading chops. The Jeep Compass Trailhawk has an 8.6-inch ground clearance, 17-inch wheels, tow hooks, underbody skid plates, hill descent control, off-roading tires, and an AWD system that includes low range and Rock driving modes.

You can opt for a 360-degree camera to help navigate through tight areas and 19-inch wheels. It stands out against competitors such as the Chevy Trailblazer and Hyundai Tucson because of its above-average off-roading abilities.

But the Compass also has excellent on-road manners. It provides a smooth ride over road imperfections with responsive handling and agile performance. It’s easy to maneuver and pretty relaxing.

Standard safety features include blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection.

The Compass could use an engine upgrade, but it’s still an excellent SUV that serves as a comfortable daily driver and capable off-roader.
