According to Car and Driver, the 2022 Hyundai Nexo is the only vehicle in its segment powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. Naturally, it’s very different from its rivals. Its closest competitor is the Toyota Mirai. The Hyundai Nexo sticks out like a sore thumb in its vehicle class, and that may not be a good thing.
The Hyundai Nexo is way too expensive for the average consumer
Most compact Hyundai SUVs are affordable. In fact, the Hyundai Tucson is currently at the top of compact SUV rankings because of the value it provides for its price. The Tucson starts at $24,950. The Nexo is a completely different story when it comes to pricing.
The 2022 Hyundai Nexo starts at a whopping $59,435. Its hydrogen fuel cell powertrain produces 161 horsepower. The compact SUV achieves a combined 62 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent).
The Hyundai Nexo is available in two trims: Blue and Limited. It comes standard with heated outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, solar front glass, and privacy glass. The compact SUV also includes vegan leatherette seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and power lumbar support.
It features a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Nexo also has a wireless device charger and two USB chargers.
Should you buy a 2022 Hyundai Nexo?
The 2022 Hyundai Nexo Blue has a driving range of about 380 miles before needing to refuel. While that range may seem impressive compared to some EV ranges, how many hydrogen refueling stations have you seen in your neighborhood? The Nexo has an impressive suite of safety features, but the compact SUV is far too pricey to be an option for the average American consumer.
If you’re looking for an SUV that can reduce your carbon footprint, the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is a well-rounded option. Honda and Toyota also have great hybrid SUV options. The Hyundai Nexo has its strengths, but it ultimately isn’t worth its hefty price tag.
