2022 Honda Passport vs. 2022 GMC Terrain

The 2022 Honda Passport and 2022 GMC Terrain are very different SUVs that attempt to do the same thing. They both have one engine option, an off-road trim, plenty of interior space, and more. The tech-filled SUVs are built for carrying families and towing small loads. The Terrain is significantly more affordable, but the Passport beats it in a lot of ways.

The 2022 Honda Passport is more powerful

The 2022 Honda Passport features a 3.5-liter V6 engine capable of making up to 280 horsepower. That’s a big step up from the 2022 GMC Terrain, which offers just 170 hp with its standard engine. Additionally, the Passport can tow significantly more weight. Its tremendous 5,000-pound capacity blows the Terrain’s 1,500 out of the water.

The GMC Terrain’s engine feels underpowered. When CarAndDriver tested its mechanically identical corporate cousin, the Chevy Equinox, it took 8.9 seconds to reach 60 mph. The two vehicles use the same engine and loads of other parts, giving us a great idea of what the Terrain can do.

Does the 2022 GMC Terrain get good gas mileage?

Thanks to the smaller, weaker engine, the Terrain is quite fuel-economy friendly. The front-wheel-drive model can get up to 25 city and 30 highway mpg, while the AWD model drops it to 28 highway mpg. Either option is still fantastic or at least compared to other similarly-sized SUVs.

The 2022 Honda Passport earns just 20 city and 25 highway mpg, slotting it far below the Terrain. The bigger V6 engine is to blame, so the Terrain is a better choice for those who don’t want that type of power. On a positive note, the Honda Passport can go from 0 to 60 in just 6.4 seconds.

The Passport is more spacious than the Terrain

The exterior and interior of the Honda Passport are larger than the GMC Terrain. More importantly, the passenger and cargo space is greater. The total passenger volume in the Terrain is just 103.2 cubic feet, which falls short of the Passport’s 115 cubic feet. The cargo volume numbers aren’t much different for the two SUVs.

The Honda Passport offers up to 41 cubic feet in cargo volume. Behind the second row in the Terrain, it has just 29.6 cubic feet available for storage. While both vehicles will accommodate most people’s storage and passenger needs, the Passport is the better option if you need a little extra space.

Both are great off-road SUVs

The Honda Passport TrailSport is the brand new off-road option for the SUV. It gives owners an exclusive 18-inch when and tire combination, and wider front and rear tracks improve stability. It also gains unique bumpers, TrailSport badges, and orange stitching throughout the interior.

The GMC Terrain AT4 takes a similar approach, adding a few extras to beef it up for off-road driving. Most importantly, Goodyear Sport Terrain tires, a front skidplate, and a traction selection system come standard on the SUV. The AT4 is primarily an appearance package, adding black chrome exterior accents, a unique AT4 interior, and more. The AT4 trim makes the GMC Terrain an excellent off-road SUV.

Which SUV is right for you?

Both of these two SUV offerings have their pros and cons depending on your personal needs. The 2022 Honda Passport is a better option for power, space, and versatility. It’s undoubtedly the better option for those in need of a family SUV. The 2022 GMC Terrain is much cheaper, starting at nearly $6,000 less than the Passport. Its highest trim level is barely more expensive than the Passport’s starting price.
