2022 GMC Hummer EV: What We Know So Far

Saying the 2022 Hummer EV from General Motors (GM) is just another electric option in the burgeoning EV pickup truck segment would be an understatement. From the company whose engineers designed three variations of the Lunar Rover Vehicle (LRV) for NASA’s Apollo missions comes the revival of a brand packing performance figures that seemingly don’t make sense. In fact, the Hummer EV isn’t technically in the pickup truck segment, per se. GM designates the Hummer’s return as a GMC sub-brand, a “super truck.”

How Much Will the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Cost?

The 2022 Hummer EV is available in four configurations. Car and Driver shows that two are in the sub-six-figure range. Prices are as follows:

  • Hummer EV Edition 1: $110,295
  • Hummer EV 3X: $106,645
  • Hummer EV 2X: $96,645
  • Hummer EV 2: $86,645

However, CNBC reported in June that GM would increase prices by $6,250 across the board, blaming higher costs for components, technology upgrades, and logistics challenges. 

MotorTrend added, “Pricing of the Edition 1 Hummer EV pickup and SUV models are unchanged as those are already sold out. Customers who placed their reservations before June 18 will retain the previously advertised lower MSRP, but all customers after that date will pay the higher price.”

When Can You Get a 2022 Hummer EV?

Unfortunately, no 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1s are left. MotorTrend reported that all $100 reservations for vehicle builds were spoken for within 10 minutes of its October 20, 2020 launch date. Reservations for more affordable Hummer EV models have exceeded the company’s expectations too. Therefore, new orders are unlikely to be filled until sometime in 2024.

2022 GMC Hummer EV Performance Specs

The Hummer EV pickup certainly comes with a myriad of super specs. With a 0-60 time of just over three seconds, it can blitz nearly any competitor powered by an internal combustion engine. With a tri-motor setup in the Edition 1 and EV 3X, GMC states the Hummer EV puts out 1,000 horsepower and a claimed 11,500 ft-lbs of torque.

Let’s be clear here because that’s more than 10 times the 6.7-liter I-6 Cummins in the Ram 3500 Heavy Duty and about 50 percent more than the V16 Cummins QSK60-2850 in a Caterpillar 6090 FS Excavator. The figure is a creatively-calculated multiplied wheel torque figure, and the actual number is closer to 1,100 lb-ft of torque. Still, more than any non-tuned diesel pickup truck.

Nevertheless, the Hummer EV needs that low-down grunt to get the gargantuan going. The EV pickup has a colossal curb weight of 9,063 lbs. The behemoth 212-kWh battery pack alone weighs more than a Chevrolet Spark EV.

Although the Hummer EV has enough juice to power the average American household for a week, it will only manage an EPA-rated 47 MPGe, InsideEvs reports. However, the EV truck will run 329 miles on a single charge, below its 350-mile estimate but still better than the Rivian R1 T’s 314 miles and Ford F-150 Lightning’s 300.

Weirdly enough, the Hummer EV has a performance shortcoming. GMC’s super truck is limited to 106 mph, but that’s probably for the best.

From the cockpit, drivers will be very aware of the Hummer EV’s more than seven-foot-wide girth. While the interior layout is still somewhat reminiscent of the Humvees that stormed Medina Ridge, it’s luxurious enough for any “Governator” to enjoy.

Outlining this is enough badging to make M3 owners jealous and a plethora of Moon exploration-themed easter eggs. The interior has multiple homages to the Apollo missions embedded in the sills, door panels, speakers, dashboard, the 12.3-inch digital dash, and supplementary 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen.

GM also hired Perception—the same team that handled Marvel movie graphics—to do the Fortnite-like visuals that feature a likeness of the Hummer EV pulling a Saturn V rocket when you select Tow Mode. On the unit, drivers can choose Watts to Freedom (WTF) mode, much like Tesla’s “Ludicrous” mode, which begins the Hummer EV’s theatrical launch sequence. 

With its 360-degree cameras, you can turn on GM’s self-driving Super Cruise feature, sit back, and watch passersby gawk at the Hummer EV’s trademark “crab walk.” If you want even more pizzazz, the transparent 1980s-style T-tops are removable and easily stored in the astonishingly large “frunk” with more than enough room left for a couple of sets of golf clubs.

Should you buy a 2022 GMC Hummer EV?

The Hummer EV is a testament to the ambition of the GM team that engineered the electrically-powered LRVs that stormed the Moon on the Apollo missions. At a time when auto manufacturers are pumping out eco-conscious transport, the GMC Hummer EV is fully on-brand as an American leviathan melding shock and awe with pomp and circumstance. If that’s what you’re after in your next truck, then the GMC Hummer EV makes for a worthwhile proposition.
