Since almost all mass-market automakers have announced electric offerings in recent years, it makes sense for smaller luxury brands to do the same. That’s where the 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 comes in with its all-electric powertrain. From a visual standpoint, this new Genesis looks almost identical to its internal combustion-powered twin at first glance. However, a closer look reveals some major changes.

According to Genesis’ official press release, this is the brand’s first electric vehicle. More importantly, however, it gives us a view of what the carmaker’s future models might look like.

What is a 2022 Genesis Electrified G80?

As its name suggests, the 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 is an all-electric version of the brand’s luxury sedan. As of writing, we don’t have exact powertrain details surrounding this model’s US-spec powertrain. However, the Korean carmaker claims this G80 should be capable of a maximum range of around 310 miles. However, it is worth pointing out that the Korean EV certification system estimates a figure closer to 265 miles.

If charging times are a concern, the 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 can reportedly jump from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes. However, this does require a 350kW fast charger. Additionally, the new electrified model’s roof is one massive solar panel, allowing you to get extra juice on the move.

Another major benefit of this particular EV is a system called Vehicle to Load. In short, this system allows its owner to use 3.6 kW of power. The goal here is that this EV can power electric appliances outside of the car relatively easily. While this is a welcomed system in a luxury car, it seems more at home in a pickup truck or off-roading SUV.

How does this EV perform?

Since most EVs are known for their performance, the 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 can’t be a slouch. To this end, the G80 relies on a dual-motor setup. As a result, this model comes standard with all-wheel drive. However, you can switch to just rear-wheel drive if you want to extract greater efficiency. The result of this setup is that the G80 can reach 60 mph in around 4.9 seconds utilizing sport mode.

Since a luxury car needs to be quiet and comfortable above all else, the 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 utilizes a clever system to mitigate unwanted noise. It’s called Active Noise Control-Road. Essentially, the system listens to road noise and creates opposing sound waves to cancel them out. This is the same technology noise-canceling headphones utilize.

Lastly, this luxury sedan gets adaptive suspension which should help iron out bumps on the road. The system works via a front-facing camera that scans the road to adapt the car’s suspension accordingly.

While there is plenty to like about the 2022 Genesis Electrified G80, we still don’t know plenty. The main missing figure is its price. For context, an internal-combustion-powered G80 starts at $47,700 in the U.S. Since we will have to wait a few months until this model reaches the U.S. market, we won’t know exact pricing for quite some time. Regardless, expect to pay a premium over the standard model.
