Can the 2022 Ford Maverick Make Small Cars Pointless?
The success of the 2022 Ford Maverick is no secret. This compact truck has been selling like hot cakes, so much so, that Ford was forced to place a pause on orders for the 2022 model year. Recently an automotive publication pinned Ford’s small truck against a small car to see if compact pickups can actually replace these traditional vehicles. So, in a head-to-head competition how did the Maverick fare, and can we expect more small car buyers to move to the compact truck segment?
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick a good truck?
If sales are any indication, the new Maverick has found quite a bit of success as a good truck. As a small truck, it offers a car-like driving experience while still having the practicality of a pickup. And that is likely why it has been a favored vehicle for those in search of something new.
Additionally, the 2022 Maverick comes standard with a hybrid powertrain. Because of this, it offers a similar fuel economy to that of a car. Although, a more powerful engine is available for those who want all-wheel drive and the ability to tow up to 4,000 pounds.
How does the Maverick compare to a car?
According to Car and Driver, the Maverick compared fairly well to the Honda Civic that they tested it against. Although the publication did note that ultimately the Civic was better at hauling people than the Maverick. At the same time, the 2022 Maverick managed much better when it come to hauling stuff. And that is thanks to its pickup truck bed.
After the testing was complete, Car and Driver mentioned that the Maverick was better at being a car than the 2022 Honda Civic was at being a truck. And in a way, that makes perfect sense, you can still haul passengers in the Ford Maverick, just not as comfortably. But you cannot really fit something like a dirt bike in the Civic in the way you can in Ford’s small truck.
Should you buy the 2022 Maverick?
If you like the idea of owning a pickup, but do not need something full-size or even mid-size, the Ford Maverick makes sense. It has a starting price of around $20,000 and offers a standard hybrid engine. Though, as you add options, the Maverick can quickly climb in pricing.
At the end of the day, determining whether or not the 2022 Ford Maverick is right for you comes down to personal preference. If you are new to the truck segment, you may not be ready to give up the comfort that a car or crossover has to offer. But, the Maverick is quickly winning among these types of buyers, and because it rides on the same platform as the Ford Escape, it doesn’t feel quite like a truck.
