The electric pickup truck vehicle segment will become one of the most competitive vehicle segments in the years to come. The Blue Oval got a jump on the competition by releasing the second mass-produced electric pickup truck in America. Rivian produced America’s first electric truck, but it has yet to produce an affordable trim level. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is trailblazing in many ways. Its patented frunk will be hard for other automakers to compete with.

The Ford Mega Power Frunk is frunk-tastic

Ford cleverly patented the design for the Ford F-150 Lightning’s frunk and dubbed it the Mega Power Frunk. This was a wise decision because many other electric vehicles will have frunks, but the F-150 Lightning frunk is unique. Like the electric truck itself, the truck provides utility and uncommon capability.

It has an amazing payload capacity and tons of storage space. The Mega Power Frunk can hold up to 400 pounds. It has about 14 feet of storage space. The frunk is large enough to store golf bags, luggage, coolers, and so much more. Sure the F-150 Lightning has a truck bed, but a frunk protects your cargo without needing a tonneau cover. It’s also more convenient to access for many consumers.

The frunk is spacious and can hold plenty of weight, but its most exciting feature is its four powerpoints and two USB ports. These powerpoints can be used to power devices, tools, and appliances. The F-150 Lightning’s gallery of images demonstrates some of the uses for the Mega Power Frunk’s many outlets, but Ford breaks it down even further in a three-episode YouTube miniseries entitled What’s in the Frunk? The series features talented creators using the F-150 Lightning’s frunk to cook, play music, and even operate a tattoo machine.

The F-150 Lightning Mega Power Frunk has already become the benchmark for frunks. The upcoming Chevy Silverado EV’s frunk will likely mirror the Mega Power Frunk’s capabilities. Most electric truck frunks will likely feature power outlets as well. Ford did it first, and we’ll have to wait months or even years to see which electric truck’s frunk is best.

More storage space opens up the possibilities for electric trucks. It’ll be tough to get more creative than the Mega Power Frunk. Ford’s What’s In the Frunk? Youtube miniseries takes things a step further and show consumers that no other frunk has as much utility.

Should you buy a Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck?

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning starts at $39,974. The first wave of models are eligible for a federal electric vehicle tax credit of $7,500, but the popular electric truck may soon lose that eligibility.
