Let’s see which is better for your on-road needs, while also being ready for your off-road fun.

The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline and 2022 Chevy Suburban Z71 both have off-road capabilities

Both full-size SUVs will be capable of going off-road. The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline is .8 inches higher than the standard Expedition, giving it better clearance for off-roading. It’s coming with a 3.5-liter, twin turbo V6 capable of 440-hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The Expedition Timberline’s engine setup will allow it to climb more easily, making it a pro at off-roading.

In addition, the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline has a cool feature called Trail Turn Assist. This is just like the Bronco’s feature, which “brakes the inside rear wheel to help tighten the truck’s turning radius on loose surfaces.”

The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline has 33 inch tires. You’ll be able to differentiate a Timberline from the standard 2022 Ford Expedition by its black tires and orange bumper accents.  It also has a mesh grille and LED headlights, with an orange LED strip across the front. All this will cost you about $65,000.

What is the 2022 Chevy Suburban Z71 package?

The 2022 Chevy Suburban Z71 package is the newest Suburban’s mid priced package, starting at about $61,900, according to Motor1. So what do you get for all that money? A pretty sweet off-road package, including a 5.3-liter V8 engine capable of 355-hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. It’s a four-wheel drive with a ten-speed automatic transmission, and twenty inch tires. Its front skid plate makes it a great off-road vehicle.

If you want to spend a little more, like an extra $4,785, you can also opt for the Z71 Signature Package. This will get you additional safety features, like parking assistance.

It also includes a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, and heated second-row seats (your kids will thank you for that).

You can tell a 2022 Suburban Z71 by its black tires and grille (which hide its red recovery hooks).

Both full-size SUVs offer upscale interiors

The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline comes equipped with a 12 inch touchscreen, though you can opt for a larger screen. It has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has a collapsible third-row.

The 2022 Chevy Suburban Z71’s touchscreen is a little smaller, at just ten inches. However, it does offer entertainment displays for second and third-row passengers.

You can’t go wrong with either full-size SUV. If you’re trying to narrow down your options, you’ll have to figure out your priorities. The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline is certainly equipped for off-roading with its larger tires and high stance. Yet the interior of the 2022 Chevy Suburban Z71 may draw you in. Neither large SUV has been crash-tested yet, so we’ll have to wait to see which is the safer vehicle.
