The 2022 BMW 3 Series has tenure as one of the most recognizable luxury sedans on the market. However, Alfa Romeo has a tempting competitor for the seasoned Bavarian, and you can buy the base for nearly the same money. So, given a choice between the 2022 BMW 3 Series and the 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia, which sedan should you buy?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series is available in a 330i, 340i, and electric versions before reaching the incomparable M3 at the top of the range. The base 330i gets a 2.0L turbocharged engine which motivates the BMW model to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds. Compared to the base Alfa Romeo Giulia, this is pretty quick. Despite having an available 280 horsepower on tap, the Giulia took 6.7 seconds to sprint to 60 mph. While that is still quick by most four-door luxury sedan standards, the Giulia still loses to the BMW by half a second.

In terms of handling, Consumer Reports says that the BMW is sharp, exhibiting minimal body lean as it pushes through corners. However, the steering in the BMW reportedly lacks feedback, which the Alfa Romeo Giulia does exhibit. The Giulia steers quickly and eagerly, transferring solid feedback to the operator, if with a propensity for oversteer. So while both cars have merit in the corners, the Giulia seems happiest hitting an apex.

The BMW features a refined, if understated, interior outfitted with generous padding and quality materials. Further, the 3 Series insulates occupants from road noise with ease, creating a relaxing environment. The BMW also provides an accomodating driving position and decent visibility.

Conversely, Consumer Reports says the Alfa Romeo is hampered by the cheap feel of the switchgear and steering wheel stalks. Consumer Reports also describes access as tight, with oddly positioned sills and an at-points cramped interior. Although material quality and access can be disappointing, the Giulia features a stylish interior presentation with muted metallic accents and a feeling of the mark’s illustrious motorsport heritage.

Both cars are by no means affordable, but that is to be expected with a luxury sedan like the BMW or Alfa Romeo. The 2022 BMW 3 Series starts at $41,450 for the base model, and consumers can option the car to nearly $57,000. Given the comparatively dramatic styling and presence of the Giulia, it is no surprise that the Italian four-door is more expensive. The base model 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia with the 280 horsepower four-cylinder engine starts at $43,350.

If money is no object, consumers can option the BMW up to $56,700, and the Giulia goes even further. Alfa Romeo’s premier Giulia, the Quadrifoglio, will set you back a cool $78,830- if you can get one. However, the Quadrifoglio might be worth it with a Ferrari-esque 550 horsepower turbocharged V6.

Although the Alfa Romeo is a more stylish machine, the BMW beats it in just about every category. The 2022 BMW 3-Series is more comfortable, quicker, and more affordable. With a score of 80 against the 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia’s 50, Consumer Reports recommends the BMW.
