The 2021 Tesla Model Y Finally Beat the Tesla Model X According to Edmunds

The Tesla Model X and Model Y have seemed to be going head to head for some time, regardless of the fact that they aren’t direct competitors. Tesla doesn’t have an extensive lineup of vehicles to their name but rather focuses on modifying and perfecting the few they do have. So, there aren’t a ton of variations of SUVs and sedans to fit each consumer niche, but rather one vehicle to fit each category. As modern, spacious vehicles, it’s easy to see why any driver might have the choice between the few options Tesla offers, and for once, it seems like the Model Y is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

Best electric luxury SUVs

The Tesla Model X and Tesla Model Y both made Edmunds list of best electric luxury SUVs. In fact, both vehicles go pretty toe-to-toe with scores, each ranking within the website’s top 5 for the category. But, the Model Y ranked above the Model X when comparing specific types, putting the Model Y Performance over the Model X Long Range.

The Tesla Model Y is more affordable

To start, the Tesla Model Y is more affordable than the Tesla Model X, which might be one of the few reasons it placed above it in the listing. Both received a score of 8.1/10 on the website’s rating scale, so it takes real nitpicking to have selected which one came out on top. For what the Model Y has to offer, it is a great bargain for the price, though the Model X is still a great vehicle if you wanted to spend a bit more on your next electric luxury SUV.

Ahead in the ratings

Luckily for us, we don’t have to guess how these cars compare, as Edmunds has a specific formula that they follow, rating each aspect of the car with a number value. While it’s a tight competition between the two, the Tesla Model Y Performance sneaks by the Tesla Model X Long Range by a few hairs, just one score above it when testing the quality of the drive. Interestingly enough, the Model X outscores the Model Y in just about every other category.

Regardless of the scoring placement, both the Tesla Model X and Model Y are great options in their price range, and if it comes down to nitpicking the smaller differences just to pick one over the other, that really means that price is what sets them apart.
