The Subaru Solterra electric SUV has grabbed the attention of EV enthusiasts for at least two reasons. The first is that the Solterra is the first global market EV that Subaru has ever produced. The second reason is that the Solterra is effectively the twin sibling of the upcoming Toyota bZ4X. Considering the Solterra is effectively the same car, we can safely assume that most of its specs will cross over to its Toyota counterpart.

Subaru really wanted to play up the Solterra’s reveal as much as possible. So, rather than do the traditional curtain pull on a run-of-the-mill elevated stage. The Solterra was driven out from behind a giant screen that parted as the Solterra rolled forward on an LCD screen floor. As the car rotated, it looked as if it were floating since the image on the screen below it stayed static.

It was honestly a pretty trippy effect to see in person. Although, looking down at the floor instantly made us motion sick, so the special effects came with a price.

This is what we learned about the Solterra

With the grand reveal out of the way, the automaker granted the audience some hard facts about the upcoming Subaru Solterra. One of the first specifications discussed was that the Solterra will have Subaru’s obligatory symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

We originally heard that there would be FWD and AWD versions of the Solterra, but according to Subaru, the AWD trim is the only version that will be sold in America. This is likely because Subaru knows its customers enjoy the great outdoors and prefer AWD drivetrains to traverse dirt roads and unbeaten trails.

Solterra has the ground clearance and space for a weekend in the great outdoors

In addition to the AWD system, Subaru gave the Solterra 8.3 inches of ground clearance. Subaru claimed that the Solterra’s ground clearance is more than the Ford Mustang Mach E or the Tesla Model Y. Though, we contend that is an easy target as we don’t think many Mach E or Model Y owners are keen on overlanding.

We also learned that the Solterra will have plenty of space. Subaru confirmed that their EV will have 126 cubic feet of interior room and 30.3 feet of cargo space. More than enough room for camping gear or a pet.

Other features include Subaru’s EyeSight suite of safety technology, a 12.3-inch main touch screen, a 360-degree camera system, and “Hey Subaru” voice-activated assistant.

What is the battery range for the Subaru Solterra?

According to Subaru, the Solterra will have 220 miles of range on a full charge. The Solterra will feature DC fast charging, which means it can reach 80% battery power in less than an hour on the proper charger.

How much does the Subaru Solterra cost?

The MSRP for the Subaru Solterra is still unknown at the moment. A Subaru spokesperson told us that the automaker “is not ready” to talk about pricing yet. Technically, the Solterra revealed at the show is a prototype, and some things are not 100% finalized. When asked when more information would be disclosed, they were hesitant to give any specifics.

We guess that Subaru will spill the details sometime next spring. Stay tuned to MotorBiscuit for any updates as they become available.
