The 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 Got Drug By the 2021 Nissan Titan on Consumer Reports

The pickup truck market is one of the most competitive segments in the automotive industry. The Ford F series tends to dominate the field, but don’t be fooled; some other major players are circling the pickup truck market, as well. The 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 is one such major player, but somewhat surprisingly, Consumer Reports ranked the 2021 Nissan Titan higher than the Silverado.

The 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 Nissan Titan are both well-loved pickup trucks

Consumer Reports hasn’t ranked that many pickup trucks, but, in general, the pickups it has tested haven’t done that well compared to other segments. Consumer Reports vales the entire package of a car as opposed to just a handful of features. For this reason, specialized vehicles like sports cars or pickup trucks don’t tend to score as well, like sedans, crossovers, and SUVs.

Is the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 a good truck?

The Chevy Silverado 1500 is an icon in the pickup truck world. It has been the foundation of many small and large businesses as the workhorse. However, Consumer Reports found that its reliability history is a bit of an issue and, as a result, gave it a 45/100.

Which Chevy Silverado engine is the best?

The engine options for the 2021 Chevy Silverado are extensive. It has five different options;  2.7-liter 4 turbo (310 hp), 3-liter 6 turbodiesel (277 hp), 4.3-liter V6 (285 hp), 5.3-liter V8 (355 hp), 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp). CR tested the 5.3-liter V8 option with the 10-speed automatic transmission. CR reports smooth power delivery and plenty of it. The 5.3-liter averages 17 mpg combined fuel economy, which is fairly standard for its class. It can also tow up to 9,600 lbs in this configuration.

There is more to the truck than just the engine. Unlike, 2021 Nissan Titan, the Silverado 1500 did pretty well on the road test across the board. CR found it to be responsive and nimble (for a full-size pickup) in the corners. Like most pickups, the Silverado’s suspension was a bit too stiff and made for an uncomfortable ride. This is because the Silverado is made to work, and a stiffer suspension helps it perform better for hauling and towing. For this reason, the interior is also a bit stark and plain.

Is the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 reliable?

Over the past 10 years or so, Silverado has seen several mechanical reliability and body/paint integrity issues. This is a sure-fire killer for CR testers. The 2020 model year had fewer problems so far than many previous years. Specifically, it struggled with braking issues and some electronic problems too. As far as the 2021 model, reliability issues will have to be judged once these trucks have been on the road for longer.

Is the 2021 Nissan Titan a good truck?

The 2021 Nissan Titan got an overall score of 55/100. Although that may seem low compared to other segments, it’s not half bad for pickups on CR. Interestingly, the Titian got more mixed scores than the Silverado. Still, its reliability history was a bit better, making more wiggle room in other places.

What engine does the 2021 Nissan Titan have?

Many pickups these days have a wide variety of engine options, but the 2021 Titian is only offered with one engine, the 400-hp 5.6-liter V8. CR calls the Nissan Titan’s powertrain “one of the punchiest in the segment.” It can hit 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. The Titan gets 16 mpg, which is similarly standard fare for the full-size pickup marketplace. The Nissan Titan has a max payload capacity of 1,620 lbs and a max towing capacity of 9,390 lbs.

The interior is a step above the Chevy. There is a mix of materials and design elements that go farther than the Silverado’s stoic work truck aesthetic. Although there are so cheap-feeling plastics, overall, the cabin reassures the buyer that their money was well-spent.

Is the Nissan Titan reliable?

Based on previous models, CR gave the predicted reliability of the Titan a lowly 2 / 5, which isn’t great, but it is better than the Silverado’s 1 / 5. CR didn’t mention any specific issues that lead to this low rating.

Overall, it seems like the two trucks are actually a bit closer in reality than the CR scores make them out to be. At the end of the day, CR did rank the Nissan Titan more reliable than the Silverado and had a nicer ride and cabin. It’s important to remember that even pickup trucks are an entire package, not just an engine attached to a bed.
