Buick is one of the oldest auto manufacturers. Though the trusted automaker offers a dependable product line, it’s not often considered a luxury car brand. But the 2021 Buick Enclave strives to change that image. The three-row midsize crossover SUV exudes elegance and recently earned an esteemed spot on a Consumer Reports list.
The best luxury SUVS to buy right now
Consumer Reports recently took a look at the best luxury SUVs for the 2021 model year. It came up with a list of the “10 Best Luxury SUVs You Can Buy Right Now.” As expected, BMW, Lexus, and Porsche dominate the list. Surprisingly, Buick snuck into a spot among its illustrious competitors, with the 2021 Enclave receiving an overall score of 76 out of 100.
CR calculates its overall score rating by combining each vehicle’s road test results, owner satisfaction, and predicted reliability ratings. Safety also plays a role, with each model earning points for advanced safety features such as blind-spot warning, automatic emergency braking, and forward-collision warning. Results from various crash tests are also a consideration in determining the overall score.
Consumer Reports ranks the top 10 vehicles by highest overall score. Characteristics such as a commanding view of the road, leather interior cabins, and stylish exteriors are common among all the models on this year’s exclusive list.

The 2021 Buick Enclave is as luxurious as other high-end brands, but it earns a spot on the list with its extreme comfort and responsive engine. Its energetic 3.6-liter V6 pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission to provide powerful performance.
Also, the ride is smooth and comfortable, with a third-row seat providing ample space for passengers. An easy-to-use infotainment system contains connectivity features that offer a pleasurable experience for all occupants.
The Enclave’s base model starts around $40,000, and its top trim starts around $50,000. That’s still considerably lower than other prices in its class.
Big-name competition in the luxury SUV segment
Securing the top spot on Consumer Reports’ list is the 2021 BMW X5. Ranked number one in its class, this luxury SUV starts from about $59,400 to $105,100. Giving the BMW X5 an overall score of 84, Consumer Reports said that this “luxurious, slick, and well-rounded vehicle” is the best SUV it has ever tested.
Earning an overall score of 83, the 2021 Lexus RX took second place on the list. Its impressive fuel economy of 22 mpg for the 3.5-liter V6 and 29 mpg for the 450-hp hybrid powertrain undoubtedly factored into the decision. CR noted, “No matter which version you buy or how it’s equipped, the RX’s ride comfort is plush, and the cabin is very quiet and well-finished.”
The 2021 BMW X7 and 2021 Lexus NX each received an overall score of 82. The 2021 Lexus UX and Porsche Cayenne got an 81 out of 100. With a segment-topping price of $166,200, the Cayenne sits in a class by itself among other luxury models.
In addition to the Buick Enclave, other vehicles considered among the top luxury SUVs for 2021 include the Lexus GX, Audi Q5, and Porsche Macan.
