Not all the excitement surrounding cars comes from blazing quarter-mile times, smoking tires, and record-breaking top speeds. For many, high safety ratings stir one with excitement, as well as bargain prices. Discerning budget buys with great safety features can be challenging in the hot used car market. While Toyota seems to be a go-to, don’t forget about the 2020 Chevrolet Impala, one of the safest, most affordable full-size sedans available.

2020 Chevrolet Impala crash safety ratings

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2020 Chevrolet Impala an overall safety rating of five out of five stars. Yet, only four stars were given in the side barrier test, which simulates an intersection collision between a standing vehicle and a moving object. Critically, it’s the driver seat crashworthiness rating that lost one star. But it was a five-star rating for the rear passenger.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2020 Impala top marks in most categories. However, it garners an “Acceptable” rating in the driver-side front overlap crash test. Also, like many other sedans from the time, the headlight rating was “Poor.” It may not have been a Top Safety Pick+, but it’s still one of the safer American large sedans.

Does the 2020 Chevrolet Impala have driver’s assistance features?

For the 2020 model year, Chevrolet truncated the Impala’s trim levels to two in its last production year. If potential buyers are looking for well-stocked driver’s safety suites, there’s one option for the Impala.

The base Impala LT has only a rearview camera to help the driver. The top-tier Impala Premier is the only configuration hosting welcome assistance systems. U.S. News says safety features include blind-spot monitoring, lane change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.

Other Impala specs

Each Impala comes with a reliable 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine, capable of immense smoothness on the road. With rear seating more spacious than most, the Impala also provides owners with plenty of room for storage. Its 18.8 cubic foot trunk was larger than most competitors, enhanced by folding back seats.

Despite lackluster gas mileage and a low-rent interior, the 2020 Chevrolet Impala is likely to please. For instance, one of the hallmarks of driving pleasure is presumed dependability. There’s no sense in getting excited over a vehicle that doesn’t have the credentials to last. Fortunately, the Impala is the only American full-size sedan that can eke out over 230,000 miles.

How much is a used 2020 Chevrolet Impala?

When the new Chevrolet Impala went on sale in 2020, the LT fetched $31,620 and the Premier $36,720. Each was below average in price for the large car segment, but they’re even more affordable three years on. Additionally, there isn’t much of a difference in price between the LT and Premier trim levels.

Edmunds lists hundreds of reasonably-priced, well-maintained, used 2020 Chevrolet Impalas on sale. For those in the 50,000-60,000-mile range, the price is approximately two-thirds of its original MSRP. Potential buyers can easily get a Premier trim level in the before-mentioned mile range for just over $20,000.
