2019 Fiat 124 Spider: What’s New in the Classica, Lusso, and Abarth Models

What separates the Fiat 124 Spider from the Mazda Miata built at the same Mazda plant in Japan? Aside from the badges, you’ll get slightly more power from the Italian roadster’s turbo engine and some added length in the 124, for style’s sake.

Clearly, style is an essential element of the Spider, or else most people would just buy a Miata and call it a day. Following that train of thought, Fiat kept pushing changes to the 124 exterior along with tech upgrades for the latest model year.

Here’s everything that will come new in the 124 Spider for 2019 across the three models.

Changes to the Classica

The base 124 Spider Classica continues on with the 160-horsepower engine and choice of the six-speed manual or automatic transmission (a $1,350 up-charge). While its current starting price of $24,995 will hold for the 2019 model year, this new edition gets a significant tech upgrade in the center console.

Leaving behind the 3.0-inch touchscreen display, Classica adds on the Fiat Connect 7.0 system with 7-inch display. Meanwhile, buyers who go for the Technology Package in this model will get Sirius XM Radio and Remote Proximity Entry.

Finally, buyers going for the base model can also go for a double-rally stripe or retro stripe in the center of the hood. That upgrade costs $295.

New for the Lusso trim

Most things about the 124 Spider Lusso, the next step up from the base model, will stay the same for 2019. That includes the price ($27,795), which gets buyers upgrades like 17-inch alloy wheels as well a silver-painted A-pillar header and roll-bar covering.

On the interior, heated leather seats and leather wrapping for the lower instrument panel and top of the cluster come with the 124 Lusso. Buyers get the choice of black or saddle leather.

2019 Spider Abarth

At the top of the 124 Spider line, you find the Abarth model which remains under a starting price of $30,000 for the 2019 model year. As the performance model, it adds some extra horses (164 total horsepower), sport suspension, and mechanical limited-slip differential.

In the new Spider Abarth, the big upgrade is a stainless steel Record Monza Exhaust ($995). It features Dual-Mode technology with four exits and a menacing look, but it’s better heard than explained. Fiat released this video for that purpose:

Styling upgrades are also a big part of the Abarth model, and for 2019 buyers can add on the Veleno Appearance Group package ($495). That adds red accents to the mirror caps, lower part of the front fascia, and front tow-hook.

With this package, the exterior color choices are Puro White Tri-Coat Pearl, Brillante White, Forte Black Metallic, and Chiaro Silver Metallic. On the interior, you can go with all black or black and red.

Otherwise, 17-inch aluminum wheels and Gun Metal exterior accents come standard in the Abarth. Buyers can add on Brembo brakes and Recaro sport seats to keep the red theme going.

For now, consumers will only find the 2018 edition of the 124 Spider in Fiat dealerships (and on the website). The 2019 model will arrive later this year.
