Because new pickup truck models aren’t coming off the line very quickly, people are turning to used options. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma sees to be a widely available option, but it has a substantial markup. Is this used Toyota Tacoma model worth the extra cash?

Is the 2017 Toyota Tacoma worth the markup?

2022 Toyota Tacoma | Toyota

The 2017 Toyota Tacoma has an MSRP of $24,575. Now you can find used 2017 models for about $15,000 to $38,300 depending on the truck’s condition, mileage. And location. Recently, only rear-wheel-drive models seem to be listed under $30,000.

The 2022 Tacoma has an MSRP of $26,500. So prices for used Toyota Tacoma models are nearly reaching the prices of brand new options. In fact, prices for the Tacoma are up by about 13.79 percent year over year.

This is due to the pickup truck shortage caused by the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage. New models are facing delays, making inventory scarce. Buyers are having to turn to used options, causing prices to rise.

Is the 2017 Tacoma a good model year?

Yes, the 2017 Toyota Tacoma is a great used option to consider. This was when the off-road-oriented TRD Pro model was first released. Plus, it features a more powerful V6 engine. It also features updated interior materials and exterior styling from the 2016 model.

The standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine provides 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. But with the 3.5-liter V6 engine, you get 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. The V6 engine was first available with the 2016 Tacoma. The 2015 model doesn’t have this upgrade.

Plus, the 2017 Tacoma is pretty reliable. It scored an overall reliability rating of four out of five from Consumer Reports. This is an above-average rating, so you can trust your Tacoma to have a long life with the proper care and maintenance.

The two most common issues include paint and trim problems and climate system problems. Drivers had trouble with the fan failing to spin. Leaves and debris often were caught in the blades too. But there was a recall for this issue, and the fans were replaced for free.

Also, the paint seemed to be prone to fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling. Some drivers needed to replace roof trim and rubber molding that shrank. Also, the gas cap hinge seems to break easily.

How many miles will a 2017 Tacoma last?

2022 Toyota Tacoma | Toyota

If you see a 2017 Toyota Tacoma with 90,000 miles, it could be considered high-milage. But Toyota Tacoma models are known for lasting over 200,000 miles. Some drivers have reported making it over 300,000 miles.

If you drive 20,000 to 30,000 miles per year, your Tacoma can last for 10 to 15 years on the road before needing significant repairs. So, do your research and study the vehicle history report to find a well-maintained used option.

The Toyota Tacoma will hold about 71.98 percent of its resale value. So, you’re at a lower risk of becoming upside down with your truck payment. If the 2017 Tacoma isn’t for you, it may retrain its value. It’s a safer bet than other used truck options.
