The Dodge Charger is one of the most iconic vehicles on the market. These luxurious vehicles are pretty fast, but owners are finding out that not all model years are the same. Some, like the 2015 Dodge Charger, is a letdown. 

Consumer Reports reviewed the 2015 model a few years ago, and the result was rather middle of the road at best. They didn’t find it to be too terribly exciting, which is odd since the Charger is a popular vehicle. 

Why is the Dodge Charger so popular?

The Dodge Charger is well known for plenty of power under the hood, giving it some pretty good acceleration times. There are a few different engines to choose from with the Charger. 

First, there’s the 3.6-liter V6 motor for the base trim. This motor, paired with an eight-speed automatic, allows the Charger to get 22 mpg overall. 

Then there are three V8 engines. One is a 5.7-liter, another is a 6.2-liter and lastly, there’s a 6.4-liter Hellcat motor producing 707 hp. These motors enable it to get 20 mpg overall. 

What went wrong with the 2015 Dodge Charger?

As Consumer Reports explains, the Dodge Charger’s reliability is rather hit or miss, each year seemingly being different. The 2015 model shows that as it’s one of the worst versions produced. There were a few things that made it a bad year for the Charger.

Since it rolled off the production line, it has eight safety recalls out on it. One problem that the Dodge Charger had was a wiring issue that could cause the cruise control to not disengage when the driver tries to shut it off. This could result in a crash, if not fixed. 

The driveshaft bolts would sometimes loosen, which could cause the driveshaft to come off the vehicle. An accident would be forthcoming if that happens. Another very serious issue is a fuel leak that could come into contact with an ignition source, causing a spark and a fire. 

CarComplaints.com has several problems owners reported with the electrical system. Odd things would happen, like turn signals activating by themselves and high beams not working. Another common problem reported was a driveline bearing, which isn’t repairable. The whole driveshaft would have to be replaced. 

What do Charger owners have to say about it?

Owners typically loved their Dodge vehicles, especially the Charger. But the 2015 model was a bit of a disappointment for them. With the long list of problems, it’s no wonder many reportedly sold off their Chargers or traded it in, in some cases, for far less than what they paid. 

One issue that caused many headaches was the Powertrain Control Module or PCM for short. The transmission would start experiencing shuddering when the driver shifted gears. This turned out to be a software issue in most cases. 

Many vehicles have had window regulator problems before, but with the Dodge Charger, it seems like a major nuisance. With the amount of money an owner pays for this car, to have that problem happen over and over is disheartening, to say the least. 

Some have even complained to Edmunds that the Charger loses quite a bit of value quickly. One reported trading theirs in for another vehicle and only getting $15,200 with only 22,000 miles on it. Considering the starting price back then was approximately $29,000, the resale value doesn’t appear to be too good. 

The 2015 Dodge Charger wasn’t the best model to get for this iconic vehicle. In fact, it’s one of many that it’s recommended to avoid altogether. It’s best to choose a different model or go for one of the other muscle-type cars instead.
