More Americans are turning to SUVs over sedans when buying their next vehicle. The New York Times reports that SUVs outsold sedans two to one starting in 2019. And as gas prices remain near record highs in 2022, better fuel economy is a premium. If you’re looking for a used luxury hybrid SUV at a reasonable price, you have options. Kelley Blue Book ranks the top used luxury hybrid SUVs under $30,000. The list features two used Lexus hybrid SUV models: the 2015 Lexus RX 450h and 2017 Lexus NX 300h. Here’s what you need to know about these used luxury SUVs.

Why should you buy a used 2015 Lexus RX 450h?

The Lexus RX 450h was the final year of the third-generation RX that debuted for the 2009 model year. The 3.5-liter V6 hybrid engine makes 245 hp and 234 lb-ft of torque and gets 29 mpg combined. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional.

The 2015 Lexus RX 450h saw a 7.0-inch display screen and a rearview camera become standard for all models. Other standard features are Bluetooth audio connectivity, a 12-speaker sound system, satellite radio, and an iPod/USB system. Buyers also get a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated mirrors, and eight-way power front seats. In addition, this model boasts 40 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place.

In addition, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) notes a standout feature on this Lexus hybrid SUV: a smog-sensing recirculation mode. The feature detects emissions from other vehicles on clogged roads and automatically switches the climate-control system to recirculation.

This model is also safe. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2015 Lexus RX 450h top marks in all categories except child seat anchors. That category saw the SUV get a “marginal” score. The RX 450h is well-rated for reliability as well. CarComplaints.com has received zero complaints about the model, and RepairPal rates it as the most reliable luxury hybrid SUV. KBB calls this Lexus hybrid SUV a no-brainer thanks to the quiet, comfortable cabin and pleasant behind-the-wheel experience.

Here’s why the 2017 Lexus NX 300h is an excellent used hybrid SUV

The second Lexus hybrid SUV on KBB’s list, the 2017 Lexus NX 300h, is another fuel-efficient used SUV boasting plenty of luxury. The NX 300h is less potent than the RX 450h — the smaller crossover’s 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder hybrid engine produces just 194 hp and 197 lb-ft of torque. But the powertrain comes with all-wheel drive and gets a combined 31 mpg.

KBB reviewers call the Lexus NX 300h’s interior cutting-edge. Sleek lines, finishes, and materials abound. The seats are comfortable, and the padded center console provides extra comfort. With all the seats in place, cargo space is 16.8 cubic feet.

The 7.0-inch infotainment screen echoes what’s in the RX 450h. The NX 300h includes an eight-speaker sound system, USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Options include a navigation system, wireless charging, and Lexus’ Display Audio infotainment system, which reviewers note is not user-friendly. But drivers will enjoy cruise control, automatic LED headlights, and heated mirrors.

The 2017 NX 300h is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, making it one of the safest used luxury hybrid SUVs. CarComplaints.com has no complaints on record for the NX 300h, and RepairPal puts the current NX model as the second-most reliable luxury compact SUV on the market.

What other used luxury hybrid SUVs are good buys?

The above Lexus hybrid SUV models are excellent choices for under $30,000. But if you can’t find either for sale, KBB recommends three other used luxury hybrid SUVs.

The 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid provides plenty of value. Reviewers note it now costs less than half its purchase price when new. It also offers plenty of power — 308 hp — excellent fuel economy, and loads of room. Plus, it’s fun to drive.

KBB also recommends the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e. This model year saw the luxury hybrid SUV redesigned with more safety features. The plug-in hybrid boasts 436 hp, a combined range of 460 miles, and a comfortable cabin.

The other top-five finisher in KBB’s roundup is the 2017 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid. It packs the most potent MDX engine made at the time (321 hp). Reviewers say it’s fun to drive, stylish, and full of technology and standard safety features.
