2 Excellent 2022 Compact Sedans That Consumer Reports Predicts Owners Will Love

Consumer Reports is a valuable resource when shopping for a new car. CR’s experts thoroughly test most new models so buyers know what to expect. Interestingly, Consumer Reports’ reviews don’t always match consumers’ opinions about a particular vehicle. There are times when CR might not recommend a car, but the loyal fan base begs to differ. Then there are times when Consumer Reports agrees with owners on a specific model. For instance, two 2022 compact sedans — the Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic — earned both CR recommendations and high predicted owner satisfaction ratings.

Consumer Reports’ owner satisfaction rating reflects consumer behavior

Most people have a particular car model they love and would likely buy again. Consumer Reports’ predicted owner satisfaction rating surmises how much buyers will like a specific model and whether they’d buy it again.

CR’s annual Auto Survey asks, “Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.) would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?” CR then calculates the owner satisfaction rating based on the number of current model owners who answered “definitely yes” to that question.

Consumer Reports asks about four primary factors in the survey:

  • Driving experience: How does it feel overall when driving your car?
  • Comfort: How comfortable is your car to drive? Consider seat comfort, noise, climate control, and ride.
  • Styling: How does the car look from the inside and the outside?
  • Value: Do you feel like you got what you wanted for the price you paid?

CR’s owner satisfaction rating can be a powerful tool because it indicates consumers’ level of satisfaction with a particular model. It can also be used to recommend similar models that car shoppers might be interested in buying.

Consumer Reports predicts owners will love the 2022 Hyundai Elantra compact sedan

The Hyundai Elantra is the first of the two 2022 compact sedans Consumer Reports recommends and predicts consumers will love.

“The latest version of the Elantra feels like a more grown-up car than the model it replaces,” Consumer Reports says of the 2022 Hyundai Elantra. “It has a sleek and easy-to-use infotainment system, a well-tuned transmission, gets impressive fuel economy, and has a relatively roomy interior for the class. The hybrid version is the best choice, not only for its superb fuel economy but its better ride and handling.”

Consumer Reports gave the 2022 Elantra an above-average overall rating and a coveted “CR Recommended” checkmark. Reviewers appreciate the car’s fuel economy, handling, braking, transmission, and controls. But CR deducted points for the engine noise, ride, and entry/exit access. Shoppers can avoid the engine noise and ride issues by choosing the hybrid version. Overall, CR likes the 2022 Hyundai Elantra.

CR not only recommends the 2022 Elantra but also predicts owners, too, will love the car. Its predicted owner satisfaction rating is almost perfect. The Elantra’s two top features are its styling, which earned a notably high score, and the driving experience, which came in a close second.

The 2022 Honda Civic compact sedan will probably please owners too

The other compact sedan that Consumer Reports predicts owners will love is the 2022 Honda Civic.

“Honda’s redesigned, 11th-generation Civic shines in handling, braking, and fuel economy,” Consumer Reports says, “but it has a noisy cabin and an uncomfortable ride.”

The Honda Civic’s overall score is slightly lower than the Hyundai Elantra’s, but it’s still well in the top half of the rankings and boasts a CR Recommended label. Consumer Reports’ testers especially appreciate the handling, gas mileage, braking, and controls. However, reviewers dinged the car for its stiff ride, cabin noise, and lack of ease in entering and exiting the vehicle.

The 2022 Civic received the same near-perfect predicted owner satisfaction rating as the Elantra. That means Consumer Reports thinks owners will agree with CR’s experts that the Honda Civic is an excellent compact sedan.
