11-year-old crashes SUV while driving drunk dad home from school
34-year-old Jarvis Canada showed up at his son’s school to pick him up because he was sick. He needed to go home earlier than the usual pickup time.
Canada was drunk and pulled over twice and asked his son to drive four times before he sat behind the wheel. He controlled the 2002 GMC Envoy from his father’s lap. Upon getting to his apartment complex, he confused the gas and brake pedals and hit the gas too hard while trying to stop.
He crashed into a ditch behind the apartment complex on the 1100 block of West 3rd Street. Canada tried to intervene before the crash but then went inside for a nap.
Police officers responded to the scene and met with the boy, his mother, and the property manager. They confirmed that Canada was drunk and the boy said he knew because his father was driving really poorly.
Then police officers entered Canada’s apartment and found him asleep. When he woke up, alcohol was on his breath. He said he had three shots of Jim Beam and two glasses of wine around 12:30 AM. Then Canada failed three sobriety tests.
According to WTHR, Canada was taken to Monroe County Jail on charges of OWI endangering a person under 18 years old, OWI with a prior conviction, and neglect of a dependent.
