The Toyota RAV4 squeezes between several full-size pickup trucks in the list of best-selling vehicles in the United States. It might seem odd that a compact SUV as mundane as the RAV4 is the most popular non-pickup in America, but here we are. This Toyota SUV isn’t the classic definition of an SUV; it’s not the most efficient, most attractive, or most advanced vehicle in its class. Why is the Toyota RAV4 the top-selling non-pickup in America?

How many RAV4 SUVs did Toyota sell last year?

Once the 2023 figures came in, the RAV4 totals significantly beat other top Toyota models. The RAV4 sold 434,943 models in 2023, the Camry came in with 290,649 units, and the Tacoma reached 234,768. The top ten list for 2023 is:

10. Jeep Grand Cherokee – 244,595

9. Nissan Rogue – 271,458

8. Toyota Camry – 290,649

7. GMC Sierra – 295,737

6. Honda CR-V – 361,457

5. Tesla Model Y – 385,900

4. Toyota RAV4 – 434,843

3. Ram Pickup – 444,926

2. Chevy Silverado – 543,319

1. Ford F-Series – 750,789

It’s interesting to see the Honda CR-V and Tesla Model Y among the top sellers. As you can see, the Toyota Tacoma doesn’t crack the top ten but resides in the eleventh position.

Why is the Toyota RAV4 so popular?

This Toyota SUV is extremely practical. That’s it. The Toyota RAV4’s practicality makes it a top choice among drivers. This practicality means the RAV4 meets most of the important qualities that consumers search for in a vehicle.

John Pearley Huffman from Road & Track puts it a little more eloquently by saying:

“It is a state-of-the art consumer product. Absolutely practical, built with reassuring quality, carrying the sterling Toyota brand, inoffensive and affordable.”

Toyota variety is the name of the game

The Toyota Tacoma is the most popular midsize truck in America, partly because it’s offered in up to 30 different configurations. The RAV4 isn’t quite as aggressive with options, but 15 different variations of this compact SUV are available to consumers.

The variety of RAV4 models begins with the FWD LE trim and ranges to the PHEV Prime XSE model at the top of the range. Between these, you’ll find several models, including the Hybrid Limited trim with AWD, an off-road variant called the TRD Off-Road, and several others. This compact SUV also offers a broad price range to fit many drivers’ budgets.

This might be a boring reason, but practicality is the reason why the Toyota RAV4 is America’s most popular non-pickup truck.
