When you think of big power and the need for more fuel in a truck, you’ll find yourself looking at the Chassis Cab trucks. Ram, Ford, and GM all offer trucks in this class, but only one has a diesel powertrain and a pair of fuel tanks. These big trucks give you various switches and ports. These connections turn them into tow trucks, dump trucks, and box trucks. These big pickups are capable of lots of work. The level of work these trucks can complete requires a lot of fuel. This leads us to our one diesel truck with two fuel tanks.

For 2021, the Ram Chassis Cab not only came with a bank of six auxiliary ports for various components but it offers the option of two fuel tanks. According to Ram Trucks, this truck came with one of two fuel configurations. You could have a 52-gallon Single Rear-Mounted Fuel Tank or select the 74-gallon Dual Fuel Tank combination.

The dual tank combination allows drivers to fill up with 74 gallons of diesel fuel to make sure there’s enough fuel onboard to get things done. This tank setup includes two independent fill necks, but it transfers fuel automatically between the tanks, so you don’t have to switch between them.

Which trucks have dual fuel tanks?

Even though the Ram Chassis Cab is the only diesel truck with two fuel tanks, it’s not the only truck in the market that has this feature. According to GM Authority, the GMC and Chevy Chassis Cab models offer a dual tank layout as part of the standard package. If you select the truck with two fuel tanks, you’ll have the base 6.6-liter V8 gasoline engine. This model offers 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque.

If you want one of the GM Chassis Cab models with a diesel engine, you have to opt for the 40-gallon rear fuel tank and won’t have the dual-tank setup. The benefit of opting for one tank is that you have the 6.6-liter V8 turbocharged diesel engine. This engine delivers 445 horsepower, 910 lb-ft of torque, and is mated to an Allision 10-speed automatic transmission.

Why did old Ford trucks have two fuel tanks?

An older model Ford truck typically had two fuel tanks. This was the situation with both gasoline and diesel models. These trucks had two tanks because they fit. This also helped balance out the weight from front to back of these trucks. Most of the time, these two tanks were the same size.

Does a truck with two fuel tanks have two fuel pumps?

No, older trucks with two fuel tanks used a series and parallel system. One fuel pump pushed fuel from both tanks joined by a Y-connector in older model trucks. Modern trucks with this setup run these two tanks in series by using a single pump to run fuel from both tanks to the engine. This is the case for the Ram Chassis Cab diesel truck and the GM pair.
