While not everyone that buys a full-size pickup truck needs maximum truck bed cargo space, some do. And since a pickup truck’s width must remain within legal limits, truck bed length is the primary difference between models that determines truck bed cargo space. Ultimately, in any version above the “Classic Tradesman” trim, the Ram 1500 bed size options fall short compared to others in the class.

2022 Ram 1500 bed size

While the Classic Tradesman Ram 1500 offers an 8-foot bed length option, any other version’s longest bed is the 6-feet 4-inch option which tops out at 76.3-inches, according to Edmunds. The only configuration available with the 76.3-inch truck box requires Ram’s Quad Cab option. Choosing Ram Trucks’ Crew Cab configuration locks in Ram’s 5-feet 7-inch truck bed length, which measures 67.4-inches, according to another Edmunds listing.

While Ram’s 76.3-inch truck bed is shorter than the competition’s, some excellent features make the bed space more functional. Those features include truck bed cargo lights, a tailgate step, and the “available 60/40-split multifunction tailgate,” which works like a regular tailgate or opens “to the sides like barn doors.” Ram Trucks’ “RamBox” features built-in truck bedside storage bins accessible from outside the truck bed. RamBox bins feature lockable, weather-proof storage for “tools, equipment, and even cold drinks” when filled with ice. The driver’s side RamBox features a “115-volt auxiliary outlet” to provide power on the go.

Ford offers its 8-foot truck bed with the F-150 Crew Cab configuration, but the 6.5-foot bed is the longest bed option for a SuperCrew cab-equipped F-150. In addition, the 6.5-foot truck bed is available with any cab configuration, but the 5.5-foot bed is only paired with the SuperCrew cab. In contrast, the 8-foot truck bed comes on either regular-cab or the Crew Cab models.

2022 Toyota Tundra – Starting MSRP $35,950

2022 Chevy Silverado – Starting MSRP $34,600
2022 GMC Sierra – Starting MSRP $35,400

First, regular cab versions come with your choice of the 79.44-inch “Standard Box” or the 98.2-inch “Long Box.” Next, the “Double Cab” option comes with the standard bed only. Finally, choosing the “Crew Cab” model allows the choice between the standard bed or a “Short Box” option measuring 69.9-inches.

Is the 2023 Ram 1500 worth buying?

While every competitor offers longer bed lengths than the 2022 or 2023 Ram 1500, with the exception of the less popular long bed options, the difference is only a few inches. So unless you have specific needs requiring a couple more inches of bed length, Ram’s shorter bed seems a non-issue for most people. Otherwise, the Ram 1500 is a fine pickup truck that stacks up well against the competition in expert reviews and customer satisfaction.
