The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the first-ever mass-produced electric vehicle from Ford Motor Company. Ford is one of America’s ‘big three’ automakers. Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis are all working toward electrification in one way or another. The Mach-E is the Blue Oval’s attempt at making a popular small electric SUV with the driving dynamics of a muscle car. The brand has succeeded in many ways, but the Mach-E isn’t without its issues.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has been in production for about two years. The small electric SUV is on its third model year. The Blue Oval has made minor tweaks to the nameplate, including increasing the price and driving range.

Ford has already produced 150,000 Mach-E models thus far. The fully-electric Mustang SUV has won the hearts of many gearheads after some initial resistance, but it isn’t quite smooth sailing for the nameplate. It has already encountered several troubling reliability issues (like many other new EV nameplates).

Some of the issues that Mach-E owners have encountered include battery cell failures, charging system and electrical problems, and frozen display screens. Mach-E models have even become immobile at times. The electric vehicle lost its Consumer Reports recommendation because of its many reliability issues.

CarComplaints.com is an automotive complaint resource where drivers can contribute their ownership experiences. These experiences are categorized, and the data is turned into graphs that highlight a vehicle’s least reliable model years and most prevalent problems according to consumers. It’s a great resource to see what problems you might encounter if you were to get a particular make and model. The worst Mach-E problem, according to CarComplaints.com, is a charger port door issue. A Mach-E owner complained that the charger port door opens too widely, which can cause scratches or dents.

Is the Ford Mustang Mach-E a reliable SUV?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a cornerstone of the Blue Oval’s electric future. Unfortunately, its reliability has come into question too often to consider it reliable (for now). The Mach-E has already been recalled a few times despite only being on the market for two years. That being said, most EVs encounter reliability issues in their first few years. The Chevy Bolt EV is a perfect example of an electric vehicle that fell from grace because of reliability issues.

The Mach-E is still impressive because of its acceleration, sleek attractive exterior design, and decent driving range. It just isn’t the most reliable small SUV in its segment. Ford has plenty of time to turn the small electric SUV’s reputation around before the market becomes saturated with capable options.

What’s the best small electric SUV to get?

One nameplate has stood out in the small electric SUV segment since 2022. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 towers over rivals in rankings because it’s affordable, practical, and comes with great standard features. Upper trim levels provide even more value for prices that are still affordable. The Ioniq 5 was the 2022 World Car of the Year. The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is positioned to dominate the competition for 2023. Thus far, the Ioniq 5 is the small electric SUV to get.
