1 Ford Feature Delivers Extreme Practicality in the Lightning EV Truck
Automakers are finding new places to add practicality and versatility to their vehicles. Ford already has the FITS system in the Maverick, but the F-150 Lightning offers something more. As new EV models come to the market, the powertrain, including the engine, is moved to a new location. This leaves an area unused in the front of most vehicles, including the Lightning EV truck.
How can this abandoned area become a practical solution for this Ford truck?

The engine bay of the Ford F-150 Lightning doesn’t have an engine in it at all. The power components of this truck move underneath the vehicle, leaving a large space for truck owners to utilize. Ford turned this into a lockable, weather-tight storage area that is ideal for groceries, golf bags, or a few bags of mulch. This space is called the Ford Mega Power Frunk.
What is a frunk?
Frunk is simply a word that pushes front and trunk together to make a new word. Although a bit of an odd-sounding word, it’s an extremely practical use of the largest storage area in the front of any vehicle ever offered. This application in Ford trucks isn’t the first frunk, but it’s the most useful. Frunks have been around since VW and Porsche put engines in the rear, but the small cars from those bands never offered much storage capacity in the front trunk space.
What is the new Ford Mega Power Frunk?

The Ford Mega Power Frunk offers 14 cubic feet of storage space. Most midsize sedans don’t have trunks this big. According to J. D. Power, this frunk offers a payload capacity of 400 pounds, which means you can put some dirt, gravel, or patio pavers in this area.
Space is great, but to be a “power” area, there should be something that offers power to devices you might use. Ford has you covered with four 120-volt electric outlets and two USB chargers in this space. This means you can pop the hood and create a powered workspace in the front of the Ford F-150 Lighting when desired.
Space and power could be enough to impress you with this frunk, but this cargo space in the Ford EV truck goes a little farther. There’s a small underfloor compartment that offers space for smaller items and tools that might roll around.
It’s a truck; it’s a sedan, it has the best of both
The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is the newest electric truck in the market. Technically, it’s the first practical version available to you. This is considering the high price (more than $100,000) and off-road focus of the GMC Hummer EV.
The Lightning delivers a strong balance of everything you need in a truck. You can tow up to 10,000 pounds, carry up to 2,000 pounds of payload in the truck bed, and carry 400 pounds of gear in the Mega Power Frunk. This package of practicality makes the Lightning one of the most useful trucks in the market.
