Mazda makes affordable vehicles with upscale amenities, so unsurprisingly, some of the Japanese automaker’s models have become popular. The brand’s reasonable prices give its vehicles an advantage over luxury cars. But the automaker doesn’t sacrifice comfort and convenience. One of the most comfortable small SUVs is the 2023 Mazda CX-5, and it starts at under $27,000.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV is well equipped for its $26,700 starting price. Because it’s a relatively affordable SUV, shoppers can upgrade to the top trims and still save money compared to buying a luxury SUV. Mazda starts the CX-5’s top trim, the Turbo Signature, at $39,650.

The standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. But shoppers can upgrade to a peppy 2.5-liter turbo-four harnessing 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. These engines have decent but not excellent fuel economy, with the standard option getting an EPA-estimated 27 mpg combined.

Arguably, the CX-5’s biggest drawback is its maximum cargo capacity of only 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seatback folded down.

However, Mazda gave the SUV a unique infotainment system. The company has been removing touchscreens from its vehicles and replacing them with digital screens and physical controls. The CX-5 has a 10.25-inch center screen controlled with easy-to-use buttons and knobs.

Why is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 among the most comfortable small SUVs?

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 boasts cozy seating for five. The interior is refined, with high-quality materials and upscale features, especially in trims above the S base model.

For example, leatherette or leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are standard in all trims except the base model. One level up from the S, the Select trim starts at $28,500. It has a six-way power driver’s seat with manual lumbar support. And eight-way power-adjustable front seats with power lumbar support and two-position memory are standard in the mid-range Preferred trim and up. The Preferred starts at $30,190.

In addition, dual-zone automatic climate control with a pollen filter comes standard on the Select trim and up. And backseat riders will appreciate their own A/C vents.

Furthermore, all CX-5 trims have all-wheel drive and boast a smooth ride. They also have a quiet interior free from most road and wind noise.

The 2023 Honda CR-V is another comfortable small SUV

The Mazda CX-5 isn’t the only comfortable small SUV. The 2023 Honda CR-V also provides plenty of comfort and convenience features. However, the CR-V is more expensive, starting at $28,410. At that price point, shoppers can opt for the CX-5 Select.

Still, the CR-V is one of the best-selling cars in America for a reason. It’s spacious, with a maximum cargo capacity of 76.5 cubic feet (over 15 cubic feet more than the CX-5), and fuel-efficient (29 mpg combined). Higher trims have leather upholstery, and all seats are roomy and supportive. The ride quality is smooth too.
